ODE TO ELEANOR

Who were you in your deepest, Eleanor,
A shinning star, a flower, something more?
To me remains only admiration,
Of England and of France a noble queen,
Above all these a perfect human being,
A troubadour's melodious narration!

Beautiful Rosamunda stands outshone,
But Henry's heart and wits for her are gone,
And so he keeps you sixteen years in prison,
The Lion in Winter now regrets,
But maybe he's deserving what he gets,
Too late comes to all the age of reason.

From history you passed into folk lore,
Who were you in your deepest, Eleanor,
A wanton of incestuous love affairs?
With Raymond and Geoffrey did you fuck?
Others would envy this "unholy" luck!
So, be that as it may, now who cares?

I care that you should take your real throne,
To poetry and music noble patron,
And hear us sing again of love and war,
A shinning star, a flower and our queen,
First and foremost a perfect human being,
That's who you are to me, fair Eleanor!
