If only I had listened to your song
instead of laughing as you turned away.
If only I had known that I was wrong
And hadn’t lightly thrown your love away.
If only I had seen the tears you cried
Or whispered your name gently so you’d hear.
If only I’d admitted I had lied,
accepting your forgiveness without fear.
If only now I could turn back the clock
And never say the thing that took your trust.
If only I had not answered the knock
that opened up my heart to darkest lust.
Then would we now be locked in love’s embrace?
If only we could go back to that place...

for Jimmy who has passed on now but maybe he'll hear...

oh

thank you, Jim! At least someone noticed! Now I can breathe a little easier! Thanks!

Very nice sonnet...

a couple of metric breaks (if I scan correctly) but they are not obtrusive and certainly don't affect the poem. An unobtrusive rhyme strengthened it. Very good.

A Tohmas Wolfe moment

A soft and wistful remembrance of a love too long lost to finality.
