i gaze up from the wooden floor of the cabin
each board laid with a steady hand
and an eye for art
the knots and grain contrasting
yet complimenting each other
in a heterodoxial way

i study the rafters
of our tiny mountain retreat
far above us
intersecting with each other
parallels traversing
crosscuts bisecting

a bulwark against
the myriad of snow drifts
resembling a carelessly
tossed bridal bouquet
spilling out the white blossoms
of babies breath

i note how our hot breath
and crackling whisper of the fire
fog the windows
erasing the crude heart
with “JS + MM = 4eva”
scrawled in it
the pane of glass
serving as a
suitable backdrop

his lips break my concentration
interjecting himself
into my line of vision
his voracious appetite
apparent in the contours
of his chiseled face
as he tips my chin
and offers me a delicately sensual
brush of the lips

a sweet almost innocent
gesture of affection
contrasting so
to his driving rhythm
that i succumb to
willingly
my mind blank
reserved only
for his visceral deeds
and that distant symmetrical pattern

i close my eyes
a sign of resignation
inane wanderings
as if concentrating too much
on the dream like sensations
would cause them to
inexorably
cease to exist

the beams of the ceiling
mathematically proportioned
burned into my eyelids
white on black
crisscrossing chaotically
as they blur and fade away

replaced by my cries
and a sensation so sharp
that it is
physical
and verbal
and mental
all at once

i open my eyes
and blink away
those insipid, checkerboarded musings
