Though thoughts of time with her I’d rather shun
The end seemed perfect – me here on the bed,
She over at the window when the dread
To hurt each other almost made her run.
Behind the dancing dust, descending sun
Turned the old carpet to the deepest red,
The tinsel mist a halo round her head,
My vision blurred like when it had begun.
But her sad smile outshone the sun. She spread
Her arms, came slowly up to me and said
She loved so much it never would have done
And called our love more painful still than none –
Then kissed me passionately ere she fled,
And so, preventing sorrow, sorrow bred.
