The inspiration for this comes from a true story. A college kid on my street works cutting grass for a local landscaper in the summer. He did not get his job back this summer; the owner has hired undocumented Guatemalans this year because they will work for lower wages. The owner told me himself they were undocumented during a phone call.

Grass bows to sharp blades
Dreams of college fade away
In grass scented air

Your Missing the Point

I'm not sure we should presume that the All American College kid was that wild about cutting grass."

The way he felt about his job is irrelevant, I could care less if he liked his job or not. What is at issue is how he felt when his job was stolen from him by someone who has no legal right to be in this country. He willingly took his job and unwillingly lost it for the sake of the almighty dollar. When all the god jobs are outsorced, and the lower paying ones go to illegal aliens, what is left for an 'All American College Kid' if he can no longer afford to go to college??

Maybe there's a poem about an Unregistered Guatemalan somewhere - sounds a bit Lewis Carrollish if you repeat it a few times!

hmm...

Where do you personally place the blame for those faded college dreams? On the workers hired to do the job, or the owner who hired them, or the kid for not going out and getting another job?

On to poetry:

"Grass bows to sharp blades

Dreams of college fade away

In grass scented air"

I would not repeat grass.

Suggestion:

Grass bows to sharp blades

Dreams of college fade away

In foreign scented air
