Please don’t cry my child
Those people are gone
They had to leave us here
They have been called beyond
You may still be too young
To fully understand
So much happened that day
I’ll explain what I can
The world stopped moving
As we all held our breath
All the fires and the pain
All the dust and the death
Our eyes would not close
Though we wished not to see
Our hearts seemed to falter
Watching such misery
Our voices fell silent
Our hearts began to scream
There seemed no tomorrow
From this horrific dream
Yet through all of the shock
A few took up the call
They went into danger
And gave more than their all
They tried to save the world
Yet some did not come back
They gave to us some hope
Some strength from the attack
We call them all heroes
Yet they are something more
They were average people
Like the family next door
They were never perfect
But when disaster came
They all became angels
Leaving only their names
Now I cannot tell you
Why this all had to be
Some things do not make sense
Life is a mystery
Many people have asked why
Many more asked by whom
Who could have done this?
And now what do we do
Our world was changing
We felt it in the air
We were all affected
Though most of us weren’t there
Some became too angry
While others were too scared
Everyone was amazed
We were so unprepared
In a quest for vengeance
We are missing the clue
If we are to stop this
We have to start with you
We have to teach you love
To respect others’ views
To learn some forgiveness
More than we ever knew
We have to show that strength
Doesn’t come in a gun
And that nothing is gained
When the fighting is done
If you learn nothing else
Learn what it is that makes
Heroes out of victims
Triumph within mistakes
I’m telling you this now
To help you get ahead
I hope you have the heart
To learn from what I’ve said
Now I have reached the end
This is all I can say
Still it will not bring back
All those who went away
Yet within this darkness
There is light that still stands
It’s shining in your eyes
Unmarred by life’s demands
I say to you hold strong
Try to keep your heart true
Dry your eyes my child
Our future starts with you
