"Hi," I said, "where you from?" - and THAT look returned,
staring me down. A long, hard, chill and bitter gaze that
dared me to understand. Dared me to question ever again
any 'where' that might be a... from.

Then a whisper came. Soft syllables clean and clear - "I
don't know anymore." and that was all. And I KNEW it
was true. But it wasn't all - not really, because in THAT
look I saw so very much I really really didn't want to ever
see - again... and the whisper left behind all the tastes of
cold ash and tears.

History teaches where people have been but seldom
where they are or where they end. "But there ARE places
that don't 'go away'" - at least so I thought. But I've
learned that all those moments of frail 'bubbles'
encapsulating and protecting 'wheres' that a person may
be from - so very safely for THIS instant, vanish with the
next. At any given moment - TICK - and that 'from' is just
as surely gone as if it never were, and just p'haps it never
really was a 'from' afterall.

You miss the 'froms' - even when you say you don't
because they WERE known - once, and hated or loved or
ignored or cursed or just one of the many you had as your
own - someplace - and now its gone, their gone.

There is innocence lost with each suitcase, box, bag or
bundle we pack through the years, and all the hopes fade -
realized or not, and the dreams fall and shrink to realities
unknown.

"I don't know anymore," I said to myself as turning from the
mirror, I turned out the light and closed yet another door.

Thoughtful, introspective prose

Of the most revealing kind;

And I second CoS's thoughts on those caps looking better in italics.

Prose perous

I'd like to see this trimmed down and with italics instead of caps. I liked it, though. It's been mentioned in New Poems Reviews. C.o.S.
