How do I fold my fingers
over tears and blood,
the rust that lingers
in the trampled mud

Do I sew up an eyelid
to keep back the wet
erase all that I did
with sodden sunsets?

Or are kisses to keep
and love songs to hide
warm laughs to seep
into sifting tides?

How do I fall back in love
take steps backward?
to slip on a glove
inside out works, I've heard

Do I take a pair of scissors
and cut up my heart?
Stitch it back up with slivers,
piece it back to the start?

How do I stop a vagrant tear
from uncurling down my wayward cheek?
How do I curb the sobs so near
from gleaming soft in single streak?

Oh show me how
to curve my brow
and dip in gentle symphony
with rise and fall
of breath and all
that makes heart beat in harmony

Please show me how
to love again
and I will vow
to send it whorling through my veins
out my lips
and eyes
and threadbare guise

and paint a new sunrise
