Chasing fate is like chasing air
You don't see it but you know it's there
Waiting around the corner of luck and hope
When all you have is a dollar and a prayer
That'll help get you from here to tomorrow
As you stand inbetween happiness and sorrow

You see he's got friends over in Europe
Who can give him a helping hand
'Cause he's sick of this city
And all of it that ain't that pretty
So he packed up his scavenger bags
Hopped on a one way plane

And all one can do is roll with it
When you lose your lover and your job
Both in the same damn day
Leaving you stranded in isolation
With loneliness in your right hand
And a gifted guitar in your left

Not only did I lose my lover the other day
But my job up and disappeared into thin air
My position was double booked so to speak
When their fair lady from England came back
Who was sweet as can be so I couldn't hate her for that

They were just too small a company
To keep us both in working hands
You see they only needed one bird in the bush
To keep their melodies sweet and smooth
And I was the late hand and the one they let go
I can't hate them for that but wished I was in the know

And all one can do is roll with it
When you lose your lover and your job
Both in the same damn day
Leaving you stranded in isolation
With loneliness in your right hand
And a gifted guitar in your left

So off I went to my part time lover's aparment
To sulk and commiserate with but he was gone
It really didn't surprise me all that much
'Cause he'd been complaing more than eating
About how he wanted to move over to Europe

You see when we met he was like me
He was looking to move out of The Big Apple
That turned rotten to the core
Inside all the pushing and shoving just to survive
So he took his bank and hopped on a one way plane

And all one can do is roll with it
When you lose your lover and your job
Both in the same damn day
Leaving you stranded in isolation
With loneliness in your right hand
And a gifted guitar in your left

So what's a lonely unemployed girl to do
But look for a new job on the lam
While keeping my head from spinning off balance
And spinning me off into Desparatesville
'Cause I hear the folks there are more jaded than me

So I'm gonna keep my head in check
And my heart inside my chest
With both feet on the ground
'Cause if it gets stuck in my throat
How can I take on an interview or two
If I can't speak and my face is turning blue

And all one can do is roll with it
When you lose your lover and your job
Both in the same damn day
Leaving you stranded in isolation
With loneliness in your right hand
And a gifted guitar in your left
