Only when I have tied
that last knot can I step away
and see your bound body

as something different from a white oak
or a supple young birch I meant to train
in its insistent growth.

Then, the taut loops of hemp loose
themselves into background and I
refocus on the fine surface

of your opened, pristine skin,
where my delight is all the odds and ends
I may now, at leisure, stroke.
