There used to be tigers
   hiding in shadows
      in the evening-dark street
ready to get me
   in between lamps
      on inaudible feet
but if heading home
   I broke into a trot
      I would make it alright
to the brightly-lit windows
of home that would welcome me
      in for the night.

It's no longer tigers
   that haunt my way home
and flee from a friendly light /
my knowledge and doubts
   take turns in their presence
      to question whatever's in sight;
in daylight or darkness
   they're always there, hiding
in crannies and nooks in my mind
to appear at the call
   of any new sign
that, eyes widely open, I'm blind.
