So Trapped

bywakingDown©

The door is thankfully iron bound oak
Stout enough for the time being
I suppose
But it cannot hold forever

"Let us out." They plead and beg
Their long and bony fingers curl
Under the door, hoary nails scraping

The light is faltering, only hours left
Before the batteries die and dim
Not enough
Dawn is far longer from now

"We only want to play."
Their voices are soft, but wet
Choking on the blood in throat

The flashlights beam quakes in my hand
The hinges are vibrating more
Not long
Before they pull the nails free

"We are so hungry." They whine
They all speak in unison, as legion
As they bang and claw upon the door

The door is the only way to the exit
And they are filling the hall beyond
So trapped
What holds them at bay holds me too

"Soon you will be hungry too."
They assure me with audible grins
And I know they are right

The door is starting to splinter
The hinges are rattling loose
And so
I wait to see their long, toothy grins
