Sorry You Done Got Fat

Last Sunday afternoon I dozed on the couch
Watching a ballgame of which I had no vested interest
When I heard your car outside I peered through my vertical blinds and
Watched you while you sat in your car and ate.

I've never seen you eat in your car before
I've never seen you stuff French fries into your mouth
While you sat and read something with
Those cheap eyeglasses like they sell at Wal-Mart.

I was appalled, I was shocked at
The level of your depression
What happened to the young lady with her conniving lust for life?
Where is the woman who beguiled men like the Sirens of Titan?

You've gained weight and it isn't becoming but
Nothing compared to the look on your face as I watched your
Profile chewing a mouthful of greasy potatoes which
You ate with neither relish nor necessity but with gluttony

I had to go back a lifetime to remember
The last time I saw someone so utterly unhappy
With themselves and me and the world in general
I remembered my former bride, now a stranger to me

I watched until you went into your house
Still incredulous of the change in you
You didn't look like the young woman with
The world by the tail anymore but instead
You looked like your mother
