we stopped on the bridge
what time is it she asked

i took the watch
off my wrist
and let it be carried away
by the dark water below

I hope the watch was not worth much...

Watch under the water! or Time under the bridge. I could have guessed that there is humor here with the alluson to time and the water under the bridge, but why not simply tell her the time? I believe the poem did not try to be funny or ironic.
