I saw you off to war and waited.
Got one letter in ten years. Two
months prior to your release you
tell me you've found god and made
a deal. No apologies. No regard to
the time I served. I shaved off my
youth and wasted a decade and some
change on a man who squandered my
fertility. Pinched my love between
finger and thumb. Guzzled and drank
my strength. Tossed the dice and bet
my best years.

Shame

It is a shame when one leaves the comfort of a warm bed and woman for the clamor of chains and sweaty men.

I'm old enough to remember the Sam Cook song, so for me "war" was a prison chain gang.
