was on the free book shelf
at the coffee shop by the river

would you order a soda… or just water?
and the maroons and daisies of this day might become softly muted

I recognize the author
from, of all things, the television

would you recognize him as well?
how could this lapse in my rose-colored protocol conquer your smile?

I open the nearly-torn cover and out drops
a photograph of white-shirted man
with skinny tie
and his head resting on the jawbone
of some poor dead jackass

     I imagine you’d strike that pose…and
even the chrysanthemums growing on my stony side would wilt in breathlessness

the photo was labeled “Live Faust Die Jung”

you’d see the fun in this
and your laughter would plunge me back into the fragrances of “what if”

and the back was signed for Doug,
“Sorry for the lateness in getting this CD to you.
Things have been a bit twisted.
-Jake.”

“What CD was it?” you would wonder, as if on cue,
and I take the violet-shaded way around this time

A page was marked with a ticket to the
Grand Prix of Monterey
for June 7, 2002.

how often would we really look at the world in cellophane hues?
and would Jake have had time to read this before the race started?

I’ve stopped halfway through the book
ending each chapter with what I’d imagine you’d rant
if I could only tell you

and you’d look at me with that flash of hush
     and I don’t
     because you already know

…look at the world in cellophane hues

‘It’s pretty obvious’, I told myself from the third line or so, ‘you can see the hand writing of a poet who knows her craft so well’. here are the parallel narratives, evolving images reflecting on each other. I do have a ‘but’. At some point I wished it could be condensed some. I felt that I got the point of the ‘situational image’ so to speak at the café and with the found book with its details, reflecting on the relations you had in mine. Beyond a number of details the continuous image lost some of its freshness to me. I realize however that the question; to what degree should a poem expand is very subjective (IMO)

I join the communal request: more?

how wonderful

to have a poet return and breathe life into the stale air of this place. Dear Lady, you and your wonderful prose have been sorely missed.

I enjoyed this tremendously, wouldn't change a thing.

I hope to see more from you.

best wishes,

maria

Such an idyllic read turning into a memory laden coffee somewhere beyond the races at Monterey. You always manage to grip your reader inside the story and then gently squeeze them along with the juice of living with your words. Very impressionistic and visual poem. This poem is mentioned on the New Poems Review thread in literotica's Poetry Feedback and Discussion forum.

Well, well,
welcome back to the raucous Lit scene.
A fascinating read with which to announce your return;
evokes a vivid bookstore scene
{easy to do when you consider how books are so alive}.
Don't be a stranger.
