Why should you scowl at me?
I didn't choose this guise and shape –
This scaly skin and fiery breath,
its air of sulphurous decay
are not my doing; dirty green
with spots of livid yellow not the scheme
I'd have designed. There is a glass
among my hoard that makes me see
my eyes are rather nice –
   don't you agree?

I know I'm hideous in man's eyes.
I hold no claim to elegance or style,
an unattractive brute that makes you run...
'He smells,' you say. It's true.
The creature's violent, you think,
and watch my claws, my muscular tail, my tusks –
my lonely tears remain unseen
and no one ever sees
   my lair is clean.

There's scanty comfort in a cave
and no one stays for conversation –
ere I can speak you flee
and there's no sense in seeking,
since when I come to town
the doors are locked upon me.
Don't let externals fool you;
the gentleness that's in my mind
is there for anyone
   who's not unkind.

A dragon is no niggard.
Would you spend your time
in brick and concrete only?
You know that beauty is a basic need
and since I cannot turn a paper page
I take refuge in jewels
to fit the cold conditions
of my stony quarantine –
on their objective value
   I'm not keen.

They're nice, that's all, just shells,
smooth beauty lacking substance –
you should know. You put more faith
in eyes and ears than in your mind;
the people that you crave
give hardly entertainment.
They just have pretty faces
you value over their humanity –
taking your jewels seriously
   seems mad to me.

A pleasant if inconsistent verse

It works to a degree, but you could improve it with a good edit - some lines seem a little jerky and one of the stanzas is a line short for instance - but it is effectively delivered for the most part nonetheless. Sweet O
