The Final Dance
I watch you as you trace the lines of my shoulder,
your fingers leaving trails of fire along my nerves.
The concentration in your face as you study my body,
my face,
excites and alarms me.
I know this is it.
We have promised each other, no more.
Reality calls.
This dream land has been a wonder,
but we must leave it behind.
As your hands begin their familiar exploration,
my breath quickens,
my pulse races,
my body trembles.
How do we leave this magic alone?
How do we deny the fantasy that makes the gray reality of our
lives bearable?
I take my hands and caress your body, stroking it,
feeling you respond to my touch.
Your body's reaction causes a reaction in my own,
an answering ache
of need
and desire.
The pain of losing this magic we create together is unbearable.
But nothing lasts forever.
We must forget the magic for now
and lead our drab lives.
Perhaps someday we can make this dream live again.
We can dance again that dance that lovers know so well.
When that time comes, my love,
I will save a dance for you.
