An ekphrastic poem
inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's painting

If I squint, the bars on the window
disappear as if I were free
    like the cloud scoops blue
out of the distant waves of mountain
to lift a drink to God’s lips
and stirs the green of the olive trees
until the colour rises to my mouth
and I can taste the mercy that is beauty.

This is absolutely beautiful. While I enjoyed the illustration coupled with the poem, the lines and their images were sufficient by themselves.

Never believing that the spiritual and the sensual are mutually exclusive drew me to this web-site in the first place. That's what this poem meant to me.

I am with the others. Well done. A very successfully and technically spot on poem.

I enjoyed it. You did a good job bringing out the essence of the painting.
