I am walking along a street, and I see you.
You, who I have forced from my mind,
You, who dominated my thoughts and my life long after you left.
You, whose smile lit up my life and whose anger drove me away,
Drove me do a foreign land where I sought to make a home.
Now you are here, and I know I will never be free.

The sight of you brings memories rushing back;
I remember kissing in the sea under the moon,
I remember making love on the beach.
I remember holding you close,
I remember you shouting in ecstasy.
But I cannot forget the pain that you caused me.

You see me, and you smile.
You, smiling, the one who has created this agony.
You, calmly smiling, smiling and controlled. Smiling.
How dare you smile? You bring only tears.
Tears and joy. Joy I have never replaced.
Your departure left me empty, but
You smile.

You smile as you smiled from the pool table,
As you smiled from my bed
As you smiled on your father’s yacht,
As you smiled from another’s arms.
A knowing smile, a smile of power.
I hate the smile even as I weaken before it.
I turn back, look along the street.

You are gone.
Only the pain remains.
The pain, and the
Smile.
