When anything you say is said in vain
you find your words to be your words no more:
they'll fade away before the wind and rain.

True failure means you cannot share your pain
since mutual silence chills you to the core
and anything you say is said in vain.

Old pleasures are too feeble to restrain
time's passage; they've grown tarnished, sad and hoar.
They'll fade away before the wind and rain

and new joys treat shy beggars with disdain.
You'll leave alone, the way you've come before
when anything you say is said in vain

to join the other pelgrims on the plain -
Like all the blossoms that your fruit tree bore
you'll fade away before the wind and rain.

When laughter's left you, no more hopes remain.
They have gone in and firmly locked the door:
as anything you you say is said in vain
they'll fade away before the wind and rain.
