The aeroplane speeds on into the night
and as the lights dim, and the steady drone
gets more and more monotonous, the flight
seems timeless, boring, as you sit alone,
unable to control where you are blown.
A steady flow of people down the aisle
walks out of sight and you just watch them go;
you know them by their bearings but beguile
yourself pretending they’re not those you know…
their reoccurrence doesn’t help you, though.
And when you realise that all those backs
are larger, older when they pass anew
you stare outside – but utter darkness tracks
your thoughts right back, the window proving, too,
the mirror that reflects their backs to you.
And you alone remain while life flows through
the narrow aisles within the twilight plane –
unending darkness leaves you with no clue
to time or destination and your brain
won’t dare to hope you’ll see the day again.
