Today

I stepped out into the sun today
Looked up to the sky and prayed
I felt the rays press down on me
And for once didn’t feel afraid
I let the noise wash over me
And drank in the smells
Of wet ground and early summer blooms
I stretched my arms out wide
And hugged the day to my side
I felt the wetness in the air
And tasted the early morning breeze
I stayed outside until the sun
Ate away at the fog
And the mockingbirds ended
Their morning song
I went outside today
And wasn’t afraid
