There's safety in darkness. It will hide
fatigue and all the effort that it takes
to keep life's bitterness contained and not

to wear it like a badge, because your face
is closed. No one may read whatever page
you'd rather not see printed; there's no need

to hide the text beneath a grin. The day
will spotlight anything and tell you to
keep up appearances. There is no sense

in being honest to the painful knife
that takes your heart out; with some luck
you may escape its edge by showing feigned

insouciance. But at night you needn't be
pretending. Just unbend; none penetrates
your silent hurt when there's no light to see.
