There’s a non-stop hole right through my heart.

I keep pouring you in and you keep jumping out.

Like a game of hide and seek,

never knowing where you are,

I wait to feel the echo of your voice against my soul

as you whisper soft my name into the night.

Your scent invades my memory

as I reach and feel you’ve gone.

All that survives is the question

neither of us answered.

Staring into yesterday

when I called you my wife

I never doubted tomorrow and

never saved any of myself for that rainy day.

Like the fallen leaves of autumn

promises unfulfilled line my path.

I stop and turn at checkpoints

only to find one solitary set of foot prints.

Again I know the oneness of my life.
