The tiger at midnight took birds
that would not live to sing with the dawn,
cows, house cats, and dogs in the street,
and bodies in bed or bassinet
soon to become but a casket.

Methyl isocyonate fog,
the fangs of which reeked of cigar smoke
and horse farms in Prince Georges County,
floated down to the Bhopal valley
for body and blood and deoxy-
ribonucleic acid.

(In memoriam December 3, 1984)
