My sweet Vittoria
I dreamed of you again last night
On that beach in the Mediterranean
You remember the one?
The stars so bright you said they hurt your eyes,
The moon somehow softer and subtler;
A thin thin crescent, closing its eye to us
Leaving us with the sand, and the water, and the trees
The leaves allowed scarcely a rustle
As if they too were to offer the quiet, the solitude
The sea's muted roar now a mere whisper
As if in awe of this moment, Nature turned a blind eye
And we lay limbs intertwined
I was around you and inside you
Your soft sighs, eyes half-lidded,
Together locked you and I
The tide coming in, caressing our feet, your calves, my back
Do you remember how the water
Felt as warm as July sun on our bodies
The breeze passing over us with no glance
Pausing only to lift that wispy, ebony halo
Over your head, thrown back in its silent primal scream
It was days, weeks until the sun started to rise
Streaking its red through a gradually graying sky
So long, for the time to pass that night
And we gave up our thanks for all those moments
Forever seemed in our grasp, and now
So long for time to heal, so patient the sand...
Another rose, offering its petals to the sea
For you, each day, each year
Forever: I dreamed we were again.
