War

War
I've seen so much of it
I want to see no more

War
Three letters, joined like an oxygen molecule
But instead of life
It breeds death

War
Men are elevated to gods because of it
And others
Reduced to crying babies in cradle

War, it is a fickle creature
It knows no master
Those who think they control it, never do
They become its slaves

You follow it too long
And become its disciple
Learning to harness its forces
But it is really controlling you

Dictating your life
What you do
Where and when you do it

Out here
I've seen so many things
People killed in a variety of ways
And for as many reasons

We are put into this dance
By both the initiated and the blooded
And by politicians and bureaucrats
Who see no faces, only power and accolades

I am surrounded by the dead, both brother and enemy
No escaping them, even in sleep
I'm damned now, surely
Maybe someday I'll feel clean

War
Before, I wanted to know what it was like
Now,
I hope no one ever finds out
