(Dropping Firing Pins)

I've been made nervous by worse things
than you,
like lead shells overhead and wet sand
underfoot,
the kind that gets in the boots
and everywhere else,
with a delirious heat that made me see you
in the sorts of places you shouldn't have been,
-makes me nervous as I've ever been

(Donning/Clearing Mask)

To create
an ideal seal
one must
shave
every whisker,
in case
one is under
gas attack
and doesn't
have the time
to shave
night and
day stubble

(I Can Tell)

Don't be
hard on me
I fell
hard on me
I can tell
you,
(least of all you)
it's been
hard on me

(Would I Could)

I love your soul and its machine
the scheme and the schematic
your checkered pinafore from the farm
that you dressed up in each morning,
and lay awake in at night
because your daddy snores,
have I ever told you that--
you're more real than the war?
more than the cabal
or horror of this or that,
but you don't lie awake at night
just because your daddy snores...
and sometimes, I wish I could
carry you all the way back home
would you let me--would I could

(Houdini's Messenger Service)

And if I happen to die before you,
-most likely I will,
two taps in the morning
means you're still mine,
a fallen lamp or window shade,
will have meant you're still mine,
a mouse scurrying in the walls
is a certainty that you're still mine,
and a shiver up your spine
when you step from the shower,
should reassure you of the fact,
that you're positively in touch with me,
which goes without saying--
you're still mine

(Evening Prayer)

Reciting the closed-mouth litany,
where you first caught in my eye,
goodbye to you in my eye,
the baseball games are over,
I'll see you at school,
if I'm good to you,
I'll see you.
