When the sky's overcast,
When the sun lies unseen on the horizon,
There's a moment
When the light's all but colorless
When all - grass, brush, trees, path, rubbish -
When all is gray and directionless.

Is it morning? Is it evening?
I find I don't know,
How did I come here, how will I go?
My way is lost,
There's no one to guide me,
No one to ease my distress.

On a mattress, mottled and discarded,
A young couple lies entangled,
Exchanging genes and germs,
Who knows to what success.

Their faces - all but unconnected
To the tangle of raised legs, straining thighs,
Supporting arms, shaking breasts, shining flesh -
Are so directed and serious.

Did they meet in a mall, overwhelmed by fever?
Did they flee the boredom of a school assembly?
Did they tire in the wee hours of a graduation party?
What will happen next?
Will they fight and split?
Will they grow old together?

I turn and see the leaves and grass
Have gained a pale green,
The day's meeting:
"How do we improve product uptake?"
Comes to mind.
This is the field
Where I walk my dog early every morning
Where I see her now, hunting rabbits,
Where the world comes awake,
Where my path stretches, impossible to mistake.
