What burns so fiercely Hatter?
Alice asked through watering eyes.
"The cards My dear, the cards,
Deck upon deck, torn and lifeless
Fodder for voracious eternal flames."

"Were they not worthy yet
Of headstones standing tall,
Lined in suits, laid in colors
To be seen, counted and honored
For the worth of their valiant dealings."

Griffin wept at just the realization
This child saw through the haze,
Drifting skyward, endless plumes
Above the embers black and red
Fed on constantly discarded hands.

"Far too many with out numbers
Suits destroyed and colors faded,
Unidentified losses, collateral damage
From pointless risky all-in bluffs
Declared foolishly in crooked games."

Lion pawed at Griffins shoulder
Urging him to turn away once more,
"No I must stay, and mourn awhile
Before this count is lost in new arrivals
And none ever truly knows their number."

Beckoning Alice and Hatter to follow
Lion led them to the ornate gates.
"Griffin will guard, as long as he stands
Scanning each piece of each card carefully
And remembering for those that will forget."
