I know things could have turned out differently
If we hadn't turned our backs on each other
But would'ves could'ves and should'ves won't change the now
And we can't rest on our laurels inside life's tomorrows

Though unlike Humpty Dumpty we don't have to fear
If we take a great fall off the brick wall
'Cause we can put each other back together again
With interchangeable hands even after all this

And I would've
And you could've
And we should've
When we were thick like thieves in the heart of it all
But all the would'ves could'ves and should'ves
Meant nothing on the back of love's ill fated truth

Yeah some days had more questions than minutes
As I turned out my pockets answers coming up empty
And I didn't even have enough fight in me left to lose
'Cause every used thought created a ripple in time

And another bridge was built to narrow this great divide
As we searched for answers inside the meaning of us
Inside this city that never sleeps except upon pews of loneliness
Where supplicants pound their fists in rites of devotion

Oh I guess it was one too many
Would'ves could'ves and should'ves
That fell from our departed lips
Causing a split at the end of our road
When all we did to try and keep it together
Meant nothing in the midst of it falling apart

So if you ever get lonely and need a shoulder to lean on
Come on over lay your weary head upon mine
We'll drink down a cool throat of Black Eyed Lemonade
While lying on the back porch of love's sheltered refuge

We'll watch laughing leaves dance capriciously from branches
While dreaming fingertips trace clouds gliding across blue skies
All of our troubles will float away inside bubbles in the wind
As day turns to night leaving us defenseless under the stars

Under the glowing moon we'll stand
Quietly praying over all of life's
Would'ves could'ves and should'ves
That stacked up like love letters inside secret drawers
Wistfully we'll gather and burn them in an effigy
Warm our hands over embers of bittersweet memories

When morning comes dancing around again
And our souls are looking to be found
I'll pull out my roadmap back to reality
That can guide us from Timbuktu to anywhere

Sure we're a couple of starry eyed dreamers
Who live inside fairy tales of whims and fancies
But as the wise ones say if wishes were horses
We'd be riding bareback under the desert sun

Oh I would've
And you could've
Yeah we should've
But what do those words really mean to us
When were facing the truth of our consequences
And our future has been buried in past tenses
