A Slut is Born

byHeyAll©

Kelly was stretching on the living room floor of her small apartment.

It was late at night and she was recovering from another exhausting day of rehearsals. Like most ballet dancers, she was doing what she loved, even though it meant working strenuous hours with low pay.

All her life she dreamed of being a famous dancer, performing in front of large crowds. It was something instilled in her growing up watching her mother's success as a Broadway actress.

Since her move to New York City, her dream eventually came true.

At the age of 25, Kelly was talented enough to be featured in a number of ballet productions in the city. She was tall, slender, with long brown hair and piercing blue eyes. Her body moved with grace and she always garnered rave reviews for her performances. Every night she counted her blessings in the ultra competitive field of dancing. But she was still looking for that big break which would make her a star.

A Slut is Born

Kelly was covered in sweat like all of the other dancers. Rehearsal for a new show had finally ended for the evening, and everyone was making their way off stage while wiping themselves with a towel.

She was drinking her bottled water when the director came on stage to tap her on the shoulder.

"Do you have a minute?" the director asked. "There's someone here who's interested in meeting you."

"A new a fan already?" she playfully quipped.

He smiled, "Something like that. A friend of mine was watching in the auditorium and he's very impressed by you. His name is James Cromwell. I'm sure you've heard of him."

Kelly's eyes lit up. "James Thomas Cromwell? You've got to be kidding me. The James Thomas Cromwell? I've been a huge fan of his movies ever since I was a teen."

"Well as it just so happens, he's scouting for a dancer in his upcoming play. He asked me if he can watch a rehearsal and I agreed. Looks like you're his pick. Congratulations Kelly."

"Oh my god. You know I'll never forgive you if this is a prank right? I mean, seriously."

He smiled. "I'm not that cruel."

"Thank you so much. For everything."

"You're my best dancer Kelly. I'm sad to see you go, but you were meant to be a star. Good luck."

She gave him a big suffocating hug. "I'll never forget all of the opportunities you gave me. Thanks."

***

Kelly made her way off the stage in her tight spandex outfit and looked for James in the dark auditorium. She spotted him sitting down several rows back. They smiled at each other and shook hands.

Cromwell was a man in his early 50's. He had a strong build with salt & pepper hair. For decades he was known in the entertainment industry for his multi-faceted talent. His rugged good looks made him a famous actor, and he was also a famous writer & director of multiple award winning plays & movies.

"It's nice to meet you Kelly," he said. "I can't tell you how long it's been since I've seen a ballet dancer move the way you do. You were magnificent."

The young dancer was wide-eyed and star struck.

"Thank you Mr. Cromwell. But I'm the one who should be giving the compliments here. My mother and I love your work. We've seen all your movies. She's even called you the best writer/director that's ever lived. Believe it or not, she actually starred in a play that you wrote."

"What's her name? I've worked with countless actresses over the years."

"Linda McAdams."

He smiled, "Yes, I remember her. She was the lead actress in The Dark Passenger's Whisper nearly a decade correct?"

"You've got a great memory Mr. Cromwell," she smiled.

"Please, call me James. And I remember your mother perfectly. She was an amazing actress and a stunning beauty. What a coincidence that I would find you here. You're every bit as beautiful as she is, and equally as talented from what I can tell so far."

"Thanks," Kelly blushed. "So my director said you wanted to see me about something."

"Yes, as a matter of fact there's something urgent I'd like to speak with you about. I came here today to see if I could find the right dancer, and you simply blew me away."

"Seriously?" she asked, holding back her intense excitement.

He nodded. "I'm working on a major stage production that blends dramatic acting with ballet performances. Unfortunately our dancer suffered an injury and had to pull out. Your director is a friend of mine and he was kind enough to let me steal one of his girls. When I saw you on stage today, I knew you were perfect for the part. You're exactly what I had in mind when I wrote the screenplay."

"You have no idea how flattering that is to me," she replied sincerely. "You're like an idol to me. The only reason I moved away from my friends and family to come to New York is to perform on Broadway. The idea of even stepping foot on your stage is just mind blowing. God, I feel like I'm going to cry right now."

James smiled and wiped a tear from her face. "The part is unique, so I need a unique girl. That could be you. I don't normally hand my scripts to complete strangers, but I trust you. I'm going to give you portions of my script to read tonight. Tomorrow, I want you to come to my studio for a private dress rehearsal. If everything goes well, and I think it will, then you'll be my new leading lady."

"I feel as if I'm floating above the ether right now. This can't be real."

"But it is real. I have a wonderful feeling about you. The part isn't officially yours yet, but it can be. Time is of the essence and we'll find out tomorrow if you have what it takes to join the big leagues. See you then."

*** SECRET GIRL IN THE MIRROR ***

Kelly spent the night rereading every line of the script she had been given. It was as incomplete version of the script, but it was enough for her to understand the character she would be playing. The story was entitled, Secret Girl in the Mirror.

It was about a woman who was haunted by her mysterious past. The script was filled with pain & agony for the leading female actress. At night she would have strange dreams and visions of a masked Dancer.

That was Kelly's part. She would play the secret girl who would dance in the lead character's visions, ultimately coming to life at the end. It was a very supernatural story.

As a fan of science fiction & scary stories, Kelly couldn't have been more thrilled with the part. Reading Cromwell's story was an absolute dream come true. Her heart was overjoyed at the idea of being a part of something so spectacular. Her mind was overcome with the idea of being a big star. This was going to be her breakout role.

Kelly then picked up the phone and called her mother:

"Hello," Linda answered.

"Hey mom. Did you finish dinner already?"

"You know I like to eat early. I made myself a small sandwich. And you?"

"I ate a crappy chicken salad as usual."

"I can never understand how you can force yourself to eat that every night. A young woman your age should be eating more nutrients to be healthy."

"It keeps me skinny," Kelly replied.

"I suppose. The pressure of being a stage performing is daunting, but you don't need me to tell you that. So what's on your mind this evening? I'm sure you didn't call to talk about chicken salad."

"Guess what I'm holding in my hand," she said playfully.

"The small vibrating object I found in your bathroom the last time I visited your apartment?"

"Mom! Jeez, I told you that was a gift from a friend. I threw it away after you left."

"Sure you did."

"Seriously though, I'm holding the script for James Cromwell's new play," Kelly said happily. "At least part of the script anyway. He gave me several scenes to read and I'll be playing a dancer who appears in a girl's dreams. It's very cool."

"You were cast in his play?"

"Yeah...well...not just yet. He wants me to audition for him tomorrow. But the part is practically mine if I do well. Everything is short notice. But he clearly likes me a lot."

Linda paused on other line. "Oh...."

"What's the matter? You don't sound too thrilled."

"I am thrilled that you have such a great opportunity," her mother replied. "I just want you to be careful, that's all. The entertainment business is filled with sharks and I don't want my little girl getting hurt."

"Mom, I know what I'm doing. I'm an adult now and I can take care of myself."

"I know that. But I have a lot of experience in this business and I know the pitfalls. I've seen so many talented young women fall victim to sleazy men. It's a real travesty."

"Trust me, I'm used to dealing with sleazy men," Kelly replied. "There are plenty of creepy guys in New York. I'm used to fighting them off."

"This is different."

"Are saying that James is sleazy? I hate asking this, but has he ever...you know...tried anything on you?"

"Just promise me that you won't do anything degrading," her mom said. "I've raised you to be a strong, independent woman. It would break my heart if you did anything you would eventually come to regret."

"It's time like these that I'm reminded why you're my best friend," Kelly said proudly. "I appreciate the advice, I really do. But I want you to trust me on this. I would never do anything that's demeaning to myself. You taught me how to be a tough girl."

Her mother gave a sigh of relief. "That's comforting to hear. I guess it was silly of me to even bring that up in the first place. You've always been a fighter."

"I got that from you."

"And I got it from your grandmother," Linda laughed. "Women in our family have always been strong."

"I agree. Anyway, I called to let you know the good news. I've got several dance moves in my head that I need to practice before I forget. Then it's off to bed. I have to wake up really early tomorrow."

"You'll do fine. I'm so proud of you, and I love you Kelly. Good night."

"I love you too mom. Bye."

Kelly hung up the phone and put the script down. She stood in front of the mirror and gazed at her refection for a few minutes. When she felt the moment was right, she twirled around her bedroom, barefoot, practicing her ballet dance for the play.

*** MAKING A BROADWAY STAR ***

Early the next morning. Kelly showed up to the downtown address that James had given her. After a brief elevator ride, she made her way to the large rehearsal studio. James was the only person in the room.

"I'm so glad you made it," he smiled. "Some actresses get cold feet and don't bother to show up. This line of work isn't for everyone."

James stood up and greeted her. They hugged tightly before letting each other go.

"I wouldn't miss this audition for the world."

"Fantastic. I'm assuming you've had a chance to read my script last night."

"I did," she nodded. "It was so good. I'm incredibly excited to play this part. I mean, the story was very well done. The character of a masked Dancer that appears in those mystic visions was genius writing. The set pieces should be amazing. I also have a lot of ideas about how I would perform the different dance routines..."

He cut her off mid-sentence. "I've also done a lot of thinking last night. And I've decided to make some major changes to the story."

"So I'm not getting the part?" she asked fearfully. "Please don't tell me you're getting rid of the Dancer in your story. At least let me audition first."

"That's not what I'm saying," he smiled. "Watching your dance performance yesterday was absolutely spell bending. I thought about you all night. I woke up at midnight thinking about you. Then I spent a few hours in front of the computer rewriting the script to make your part even bigger."

"Really?"

"Your part is now equal to the lead actress, which would make you the co-lead of the play. She was furious when I told her this morning, but she eventually calmed down when I threatened to fire her."

Kelly put her hands over her heart to show her happiness. "Oh my god. That...That means so much to me. I'm speechless. Thank you so much James."

"We can thank each other once the show is a massive success."

"I like the sound of that," she said with a wink. "So shall we get started this morning? I'd love to show you some of the ballet routines I've been working on. It's still very rough, but it's a great start."

"That's what rehearsals are for, right?" he said with a wink back. "But first, I need to see you dressed in your stage outfit and mask. It's very important to me that we get the right costume first."

"Sure. No problem."

"Good. The items are on the counter. You can get dressed in the other room."

Kelly walked over to her new attire and admired its beauty. The mask was gold colored and rustic. It looked like it was from ancient times, with large holes for the eyes and mouth. The outfit looked equally as beautiful, with dark fabric and intricate designs.

When she picked up the outfit, she noticed how revealing it was.

"Excuse me," she said to him, holding up the attire. "This is a little skimpy don't you think? There's no way I can fit into that. I'll need something bigger from the wardrobe department."

"But you haven't worn it yet."

"I know, but it's obviously very revealing in the front and back. Am I suppose to wear something underneath this?"

He smiled, "I apologize for any misunderstanding, but the Dancer is topless throughout the play. It makes the story more erotic. Maybe I'm getting confused with all of the rewrites I've done, but I thought this was clear in the version of the script you read?"

Kelly's heart and stomach sank. She tried her hardest not to show her displeasure. She wanted to act as professional as possible around the famous James Cromwell.

"No, that wasn't in the script I got. Is there any way I can keep my clothes on? I don't see how being topless in front of thousands of people is going to help the story."

"It does help the story," he replied strongly. "Underneath the darkness and horror, Secret Girl in the Mirror is also a coming-of-age story which features many sexual themes. Again, I apologize if those portions of the story were omitted in your copy of the script."

"But..."

"Don't forget you'll be wearing a mask," he added. "The audience won't be seeing your face. That should make things easier for you."

"There has to be a way to work around this. I really want this part, but..."

"But what? You can't do it? Or you won't do it?"

"I...I can't...Before I moved to New York, I promised my mother that I would never do any nude scenes if I ever got into acting."

He gave her a sharp look. "Kelly, did you know that your mother did nude scenes for the play she did for me?"

"No. I was too young too watch back then."

"Well she did it. Every night on the set of The Dark Passenger's Whisper, your mother got naked on stage in front of hundreds of people. She even did sexually explicit scenes on stage. That's why it had an adult rating and you weren't allowed to see it."

"Oh," she gasped. "I had no idea."

"She did it because she's a brave woman. She was a true artist. Just think of how many famous actresses in the movie business have gotten nude on film. Almost every critically acclaimed actress has had the courage to showcase their nude bodies to the entire world. Do you think you're above them?"

"No. Of course not. It's just that..."

"Then what's the problem? Are you afraid? If you are, just let me know and I'll find another pretty ballet dancer to take your place. They aren't hard to find in this city. Don't waste my time Kelly."

"I'll do it," she replied immediately, but with reluctance. "I'll do the nude scenes for this play. I desperately want this part and I'll do whatever it takes to keep it. Give me a chance."

James calmed down and gave a reassuring look to the ballet dancer.

"I know this is difficult for you. But I also know that you have what it takes to become a real star in this industry, otherwise I wouldn't have picked you."

"I understand. And I really do appreciate this opportunity."

"Good. Now I want you to get dressed. We only have an hour before I have to meet with the other actors."

She quietly picked up her outfit and headed to the other room to change.

***

Five minutes later. Kelly nervously entered the rehearsal studio in the small spandex outfit attire. It was skin tight, showcasing her tall & thin figure. She used her forearm to cover her bare breasts, and she held the gold mask in her hand.

James looked at the ballet dancer with approval.

"Extraordinary," he said to himself. "Better than I could have imagined."

"Thank you," she replied with a shy tone.

"Put your arm down. I want to see the rest of you."

Kelly did as she was told, bringing her arm down to reveal her tiny breasts. She took a deep breath to calm herself down. The cool air in the room caused her pink nipples to harden.

"You have your mother's beauty," he said honestly. "In fact, you're even more beautiful than she was."

"Thanks."

"I know how hard this must be for you. It's always hard the first time. I've worked with so many young actresses over the years, so I can be a bit callous at times. But I really want you to be comfortable."

"You're right about this being hard. Not many men have seen my breasts before. Doing this in front of thousands of people is going to be torture. I want this part. I think I can get used to the nudity."

"Trust me, you will," he nodded. "You have all the ingredients to be a star. I have faith in you. I've even rewritten the script to give you a few dialogue scenes throughout the play. So you'll be an actress as well."

Kelly's eyes lit up and her mood lightened. "Really? I've always wanted to try acting, I just never expected it to happen so soon. I've even taken acting classes."

"Forget about those classes. I've already contacted the best acting coach in the city for you. He's a friend of mind and I'll handle all expenses."

"I don't know how many times I can keep saying thank you before I start sounding like a broken record," she smiled.

"You can thank my by wearing the mask and showing me the dance routine you've been telling me about. I'll play some music and we can get started."

Kelly put on the gold mask, and James stepped back to play classical music on the stereo. She immediately went into ballet mode once she heard the music. Her feet tip-toed and she extended her arms. The music was haunting, and so were her body movements. She played the part. She danced to the part. James was mesmerized by her every action. Time passed and she lost herself in the role. She danced with the eyes closed and everything came as a reflex.

James suddenly stopped the music, and she stopped dancing. Kelly took off the mask, returning to her normal self.

"So what did you think?" she asked.

"I thought you were exquisite. Simply amazing," he said with a hint of reservation.

"But?"

"You were amazing, but, I thought you could have been a little more relaxed. Your routine is just short of perfection."

Kelly was slightly taken aback. "Oh, did you have anything in mind? What can I do to make it better?"

"The way your body moves is extraordinary. You have some of the best natural talent I've ever seen in my career. But your role needs a sexual undertone to it, and a part of your performance left me feeling a bit cold."

"What are you saying?"

"Have you had sex recently?" he asked bluntly.

"Excuse me?"

"You've had sex before, haven't you?"

"Sure, I've had a boyfriends. Nothing recent though."

He nodded. "I thought so. You're a beautiful young woman with powerful needs like everyone else your age. That's the missing ingredient to your performance. You're just short of being flawless."

"You aren't telling me to have sex with strangers are you?"
