Without volition from him his hands gently pulled her to him. Wrapping his arms loosely about her he rested his chin atop her head. He held her, waiting while she cried. It seemed hours but finally he turned with her still in his arms and half led, half carried her to the sofa. There he sat, lifting her onto the sofa on her side, her upper body half-lying across his, her head on his shoulder.

Lovingly Duncan held her, his hand tracing slow comforting circles on her back. There they spent the night, Helen bundled against his chest, her arms folded between her and his chest. After awhile, when he knew she was asleep and was sure it wouldn't awaken her, Duncan carefully pulled her hair away from her tear sodden cheeks. After drying her tears with a tissue he relaxed back into the sofa. Throwing an afghan over them he made them comfortable for the night.

As she slept he memorized her face. Occasionally Duncan leaned forward to give her a kiss; on the forehead, on the tip of her nose, her cheek. The kisses were soft, gentle, carrying love but no promise of passion. He had no hope of passion again. She had been through so much and he had been in the center of it. She would not be able to separate Duncan from the rest of the catastrophe. All he could hope for was friendship.

If that was all that was possible, that was all he would give. He'd be satisfied with that, never asking for more. He wouldn't add to her problems.

Holding her there, watching, he saw tears again beginning to track their way down her cheek. Duncan responded by cuddling her closer, whispering his love to her. Helen shivered, stirring in her sleep. She relaxed to the sound of his voice, sinking back into deeper, less restless sleep.

Seeing her relax Duncan rested his head against the back of the sofa.

Soon he dozed. Occasionally he woke long enough to be certain she was fine, but there he stayed the long night through.

When he woke at last, sunlight was painting the room a wonderful gold and he knew she was awake.

How times have changed

Troubador:

It seems like a million years ago that readers of stories would eagerly wait for each new chapter of a story to be published in some magazine or other. They loved the build up and the tension. Now if the story goes beyond 2 or 3 chapters they avoid it like the plague. At least that's what I seem to find in some of my own stories. Keep it up 'cause I love it. Thank You. Ronnie W.

the "real story" can NOT be known, so far

the "evidence" so far has shed no credible, much less intelligent, information as to what "Gerry" has been doing.

Gerry could be cheating but we are not so far privy to that information --- other than Dancun's err DD; but Helen HAS CHEATED, we know that for sure.

at this point, the info we've been "given" on Gerry is just Duncan's and the "reputable" agency's

if Helen is as smart as Dancun keep telling her she is, she'd do her own investigation of BOTH Duncan and Gerry and do it smartly without either one of them knowing and see where or how the chips really fall.

but for such a "smart" woman to simply take the big hero back to her bed (if not immediately then the next night or the night after) --- after hearing his supposedly "I don't wanna to tell you the bad new but I must" BS --- before even knowing all the facts,,,,

she must have mud for brains,,, her perhaps her genitals are doing the thinking for her,,, Sounding as bad as it is, Gerry MAY STILL BE INNOCENT for all we know.

Of course, the Troubador/author can MANUFACTURE "evidence" against Gerry and let the old guy/big hero Duncan take Helen. But if the author is fair, he will convey to us what Gerry is doing, has been doing,,,, If he's been cheating, let it be known unequically; if not, he has a right to come home and kick Duncan's ass very soundly, break a few of the old man's teeth, and THEN DIVORCE the cheating, mud-for-brain bitch and don't give her any alimony,,,

The story goes on with expectation supreme

It’s kind of humorous, if this was a loving wives type story this would be the lecher (Duncan) trying to influence the wife to make her belittle her husbands and turn to him for solace. Why he ever had the right or inkling to ask for the private detective investigation was a completely personal act of an intense friend, and he is just an acquaintance of one day when he did this. Duncan is feeding the fire of total distrust and adultery with an incomplete and ambiguous report she doesn’t seem to have read yet. He is intensifying her distrust and manifesting a hatred of the husband by his own dislike of Gerry. Like I said if this was a Loving Wives story he would be the villain for seducing the wife or at least put the pressure on her with his presence and comments. She would succumb to his presence and we would have a cheating wife story.

If she were a loving wife she would be expected to send him away and find her husband and confront him with all this mistrust and suspicions.

Looking forward to the next chapter and see if what we have a loving wives story from the boyfriend’s point of view.

Love to speculate as most of us commenters do. It’s so much fun to speculate as we can’t read ahead with our suspicions and captivation of what’s to come. There is something to be said for long chapters, but that would not be as dramatic for the readers

Great writing and fun reading.

Thank you
