I was down in the basement trying to unplug the drain in the air conditioner unit when I heard the phone ring. Natalie was cleaning up the dishes in the kitchen so I figured she would get it. I heard her pick it up through the return air vent from the first floor.

"Hello. Katie, its nice to hear from you. How long has it been?"

I didn't like Katie. She was a friend of Natalie's from high school and I always had bad feelings about her. Luckily we moved away from Lancaster shortly after we got married. I wish it were a little further away.

"Yah, that's what I figured. Eight years really goes by fast. What's going on?"

I didn't like the way this conversation was going, but I only had one side of it.

"Katie, hold on a second. Steve is working down in the basement. Let me go shut the door. I'll be right back."

I heard Natalie put the phone down while she went across the room to close the door. I went across the cellar and quickly picked up the wall extension phone,

"Hi Katie, I'm back. Now what were you going to tell me about?"

"Nat, there is a medical equipment convention coming to the Lancaster Holiday Inn next weekend and guess who is coming."

"You are kidding. Will both of them be there?"

"Both of them. They will be getting in Friday night and staying the whole weekend."

"How do you know this?"

"Jerrod called me this morning and is dying to see you. He asked me to call and see if I could get you to come down to Lancaster for the weekend. It will just be you and me, Jerrod and Martin."

I was holding a rag over the end of the phone. I really wanted to jump through the receiver and grab Katie by the neck. What the hell was she proposing?"

"I don't know Katie. If I can get away I would love to come down. I'll have to sweet talk Steve a little. As soon as I know I get back to you."

"You remember the good time we had at the last convention when they were here, don't you Natalie?"

"You are damn right I do. Every time I give the kids breakfast in the morning."

"I can't believe you had the balls to name that kid Jerrod."

"Why not? Steve doesn't have a clue. He thinks Jerrod is his, even though they don't look a thing alike."

Damn, this conversation was getting worse as it goes. I did a fast recap in my head and figured out that Natalie and Katie had a fling with these two guys eight years ago and Natalie ended up getting pregnant with Jerrod. She passed the kid off as mine and naturally never said a thing about the affair. Now Natalie and Katie were planning to see these guys again.

"Katie, I'll call you back as soon as I can. If I can't get away for an overnight, I might at least be able to get down there for the day. That would be better than nothing."

"OK. Give me a call as soon as you know."

After we all hung up the phones I had a little time to think. We had three kids. Jenny and Lynn were in high school and Jerrod showed up about eight years ago. The two girls are good looking and bright. They work hard in school and are both getting ready for college. Jerrod on the other hand is uninspired. He is not interested in schoolwork or sports. I liked Jerrod, even with his shortcomings.

Natalie opened up the cellar door. "How are you doing down there Steve? Are you ready for some coffee?"

"I am about done. I'll be right up. I think I am going to take a shower before doing anything else."

After a long, hot shower, I sat in front of the TV with the family. I was trying to figure out what I was going to do. This wasn't a small mistake that Natalie made and regretted. This was some thing that she did deliberately and was planning on doing again. I didn't know if I wanted to stop it and maintain the status quo or if I wanted to correct it. If I decided to correct it, I had to figure out how. I felt really stupid, because in twenty years of marriage I never even thought that Natalie might be screwing around.

"Steve, I talked to Katie from Lancaster today. She asked me to come down and spend the weekend with her. Do you have any problems with that?"

"No, not really. I'll be busy at work, so as long as my parents can watch the kids, it should be OK, on one condition."

"What's that?"

"Make sure you take your cell phone in case you have any problems. OK?"

"Thanks dear. I will take my cell with me and I promise I will not have any problems. The Volvo wagon doesn't break and I can get lots of shopping goodies in it. I'll probably go down Friday morning and come back Sunday night. Is that OK?"

"Sounds good to me. Have fun."

Natalie went out to the kitchen and I overheard the call to Katie to confirm their plans for the weekend. She didn't seem to be worried at all about the fact that she was cheating or that there might be consequences. I told her I wanted to do a little computer work before going to bed and that I would be up later.

It wasn't too hard to find the web site for the East Coast Medical Equipment Dealers Convention in Lancaster. Everything concerning the convention was there. The displays were all listed with a floor map. They had a list of the lectures and seminars showing times and locations. They had a roster of all the attendees that included their hotel room numbers.

Jarrod Kramer and Martin Blank were sharing suite 411 from Friday through Monday. I found home addresses and phone numbers for both of them in Baltimore.

I located a company that offered DNA tests by mail. The tests ranged from paternity verification to probable national origin. Most of the tests were under a hundred dollars. The samples could be taken at home and mailed in with a check or paid for on line. I filled out the application forms at the web site and paid for the four paternity tests using my Pay Pal. After printing out the collection instructions, I got all the items together I would need to get the samples. I printed out a mailing label and got a padded, priority envelope ready to mail everything in. I prepared several CD mailers and got a stack of blank CD's ready. Jerrod and Martin's wives would surely want a copy of the evening's activities.

I worked for a corporate security consultation firm. My hours were flexible but since I had some comp time coming, I just decided to take the week off. Another nice perk of the job was the availability of different types of equipment that I could use for collecting information. By this time I had pretty much decided the marriage was over. The fact that she had the affair eight years ago and got me to raise the kid was bad but the way Katie and her were joking about making a fool of me was too much. There was no way could I forgive that. Now she was doing it again. That would have to end it for good.

I collected the DNA samples from the kids the next day. They thought it was cool. Then I went to the bank and moved almost all of the savings money into a college trust fund for Jenny and Lynn, but kept twelve thousand in cash. I was able to set it up so that the trust would be safe from my wife or from a sneaky divorce lawyer. I made arrangements to have all the credit cards and the checking account cancelled on Monday morning, and opened a new account in my name only. I was going to lock up the house so Natalie would have to find someplace else to stay. I was sure she would be able to figure out some legal way to get into the house but I was hoping to have some other things taken care of by then. We could decide about our son, Jarrod, later. Even though he was not mine I felt some responsibility for him.

I stopped by the office of Seymour Schlamp. Seymour was my lawyer since we arrived in Reading. He was fair and hard working. I liked him. I explained the situation to him as best I could. He pushed me to make sure there was no chance for reconciliation. In addition to the divorce proceedings I ask him to contact Jarrod Kramer and see if he could do something about my son. I suggested $500 a month child support, retroactive, or have him take the child and raise him. The last option was for him to relinquish all rights to Jerrod so I could arrange to adopt him. I felt certain he would accept the last one. Seymour had everything he needed. I promised to send him pictures and audiotapes that he could use. He gave me the office e-mail account address and some preaddressed mailers for hard copy stuff.

Betty Moore was the most obnoxious real estate agent I ever met. There was very little about the women that I liked but she was a hard, driven worker. I gave her a listing on our house and signed several powers of attorneys for her. I told her she would have to get any signatures from Natalie that she needed herself. She laughed and assured me there would be no problems. I told her the locksmith would give her a set of the new keys.

The wireless video camera disguised as a smoke detector was the best for the job. I picked up two of them and grabbed four bugs. I also needed a clipboard, a set of dickeys with the company logo and three laptops. I made up a work order to replace a faulty smoke detector in room 411 on a company form. I would put the computers and all the equipment I needed for recording in a regular suitcase. I took a small stepladder.

Room 311 was available at the Holiday Inn and I reserved it under another name, just for Friday. It had wireless Internet. Wal-Mart had the best deal on throwaway cell phones. I picked up two of them, just in case.

My mom and dad moved to an old farmhouse near Lebanon a few years back. It was way too big for the two of them but it was a dream that dad always had. He had a large garden, chickens and an orchard. Jerrod liked to go there. They were more than willing to put up with us as long as necessary. My dad liked Jerrod but called him Jake. He said Jerrod sounded like a sandwich seller. Jerrod seemed to like Jake better than his real name. A few years ago Dad bought a big motor home and a small Kia to pull behind it. He used it three times and lost interest. I told Dad to get the motor home gassed up and ready. I knew the girls would squawk about being away from their friends for the summer. They had one more year of high school before college and wanted to get it at a prep school in Vermont. Natalie didn't want to spend the money. Although they were a year apart in age they were in the same grade, don't ask. I had no idea how Jerrod would take it. I would figure out the school situation later. Right now I had other problems. At least all the kids enjoyed being with my mom and dad.

Natalie left bright and early the next morning. She was all mushy and thanked me again for letting her spend time with her friends. I told the kids to pack up to go on a trip, and to take enough stuff for the whole summer. As I suspected, the girls bitched to high heaven. I told them to take the brochures from the Burlington prep school and all of a sudden every thing got rosy. They packed all their school clothes with them just in case. Surprisingly, Jerrod seem enthused about the trip.

Jenny came up to me and just stood there.

"What's do you need, Jenny? Are you all packed?"

"Dad, I am seventeen. I am not a kid anymore. Tell me what is going on."

"I am not sure I know what you mean."

"Are you and mom having problems?"

"I don't think that is anything I want to discuss with you. If there were something going on, your mother and I would try and keep it from you. Why don't you get the rest of your things together?"

"No dad. I mean it. It seems different this time. Lynn and I want to know what is happening. We feel we have a right to know."

I didn't want to say anything to her about it but I knew it was going to come up eventually."OK, I am not feeling very happy with the relationship between your mother and myself at the moment. Things are not looking real good for us. I don't know anything for sure that is wrong, but I know something is not right."

"Is mom cheating on you?"

I paused a long time. "I'm not sure, but I think so."

Jenny turned around and yelled up the stairs. "You were right Lynn."

"What is that all about?"

""I better let Lynn tell you."

Lynn was coming down the stairs towards Jenny and me.

"Tell him, Lynn."

"Do I have to?"

"Yes. He knows, but you still have to tell him."

Lynn looked down at her feet. Finally she started to speak. "About four months ago I was skipping school with one of the guys from my lab class. We stopped by the house so I could get some CD's. It was Wednesday, when mom usually goes shopping. You were on a job in Boston, I think. As we were coming down the street, we saw a gold SUV pull into the driveway. That guy Floyd, who works with you, got out and mom left him into the house. We sat outside for almost two hours until he came out. I waited ten more minutes and went into the house. Mom was taking a shower and the bed was all messed up in your room. I left and went back to school for the rest of the day. When we got home, she had started supper. The bed was made and there was a load of sheets in the dryer. I told Jenny, but she didn't believe me."

Nobody said anything for about thirty seconds.

"Thanks for telling me girls. It is something I never wanted to hear but it is good that you told me."

Jenny noticed a tear in my eye. She grabbed Lynn's arm and they went back upstairs with out saying any more.

Dad showed up just as the locksmith arrived. While the locks were being changed, I threw all of Natalie's clothes, shoes and personal items into 33 Gal trash bags. The bags pretty much filled the back of my Navigator.

After the discussion with the girls I decided to stop at work before going to the convention. Centerex was a company that was started locally but was spreading across the county rapidly. Their marketing people did an excellent job locating potential areas for expansion but the company couldn't train people fast enough to man them, especially in management. They had been trying to get me to take a new office and offered me several different locations trying to get me interested. Natalie refused to move and would not even discuss it. If I stayed where I was I would be in the same position forever. Moving would give me a promotion, more money and a little power. I went directly to the office of the company president.

"Is Mister Turcott available for a quick couple of minutes?"

"I think he can squeeze you in Steve. Hold on a minute." I always liked Turcott's secretary and I think she felt the same about me.

George Turcott came out of his office and gave me his hand.

"I hope you are here to give me some good news Steve."

"Well, Yes and No."

"Helen, bring some coffee into the office and hold my calls for a while."

"Ok, what can I do for you, Steve?"

"First, I decided I would like to be reconsidered for one of the new management positions at a site where you think I would be the most valuable."

"That's great news. If you have no preference, I sure have a great slot I would love you to take. How would you feel about Anchorage?"

"Believe it or not, that's sounds perfect. Is the first week of September OK with you?"

"I think that would work. I'll have personal get started on everything Monday. What is the second thing?"

"Well I know this sounds odd but I'd like Floyd Cooper to be sent up there to work for me."

George leaned back in his chair and started to snicker. "You found out didn't you?"

"I don't know what you mean, Mister Turcott." I couldn't keep a straight face when I said it.

"Steve, nobody wanted to say anything to you. I didn't like what was going on but I didn't know what to do about it. If I fired Floyd, I was afraid you would find out and I didn't want that to happen. I figured the best thing to do was to try and keep it quiet. Unfortunately, Floyd Cooper has a big mouth. He started bragging about his affair with your wife. His secretary, Tracy, came to see me and complained when Floyd started showing around pictures of him and your wife that he loaded in his computer. The legal department is working something up right now but I had them on a short leash trying to protect you. Now that you know I can just fire Floyd. That is a hell of a lot more practical than spending the money to send him to Alaska so you can fire him up there."

"Your right. I was hoping that I could inflict a little more damage but I guess revenge is a pretty poor management technique. I'll go along with whatever you think is fair."

George pushed his intercom button. "Helen, Get me Tracy Toliver."

After explaining to Tracy what we were doing, we walked down to Floyd's office. Floyd was on a job in Allentown.

Tracy Toliver was one good-looking woman. She was just under thirty and was aging very well. The combination of auburn hair and blue eyes always fascinated me. She stood only a few inches over five feet but carried herself like an Amazon. I never understood how Floyd ended up with the best secretary in the whole building. I found out later that she had requested to be transferred to my office three times but my secretary would not relinquish her position.

"You will need these." She held out four blank CD's. "Look under accounts pending and click on Stoddard. Make one for yourself, one for your lawyer, one for our legal department and one for Floyd's wife. I have mailers ready but I need your lawyers name."

I was stunned by her efficiency. This woman knew what she was doing and exactly how to do it. "Seymour Schlamp. His office is on Franklin Street."

George and I went into Floyd's office while Tracy started typing the last address label. There were twenty pictures of Floyd and Natalie having every kind of sex imaginable. They were poor quality and looked like they were taken off a web cam. That also meant that Floyd probably had a full length, video someplace. They were not taken in our bedroom. George was trying to be polite about the whole thing but he just couldn't help looking at my wife with a dick in her mouth, pussy and ass. I was little upset because every guy it the building probably saw what I was looking at now. After checking them all, I just did a file copy to each of the blank CD's.

Tracy stuck her head in the room. "Delete the whole damn file when you get done copying that filth."

I gave Tracy the four discs. She put each of them in an envelope and gave me one back. "Don't let your kids get a hold of this. I will mail these three on Monday morning."

I told George what I was planning at the Holiday Inn. He did not like the company getting involved but agreed to going along with it. We had a work crew in the area Monday and he said he would have them stop by and remove the cameras I was going to install. George and I shook hands. I thanked him and he thanked me. I guess that was a good meeting.

The trip from Reading to Lancaster took about an hour. After parking in the back, I registered, paid cash and got my key. The first thing I did was change into my work clothes. The housekeeping maid on the fourth floor was friendly enough. I showed her my work order and since no one had checked into the room yet, she let me in. It only took about twenty minutes to install the fake smoke detectors. The room had two queen size beds. I was able to place the cameras where I could get a good shot of each bed and part of the room. No sweat, I was a pro. I hoped that none of the occupants would notice that they were in a room with three smoke detectors.

I went back to the room, changed clothes and started to set up all my equipment. The pizza delivery guy got there about a half hour later. By three o'clock everything was set up. Both the cameras were working great. The pictures were clear, even with normal room lighting. My laptop was up and running with a good, high speed, connection. I had one camera set up to record whenever there was motion the other one I would run manually. Damn, I loved my job.
