**********

'Damn, I love it up here,' Chris realized as he stepped out into the chill of the morning air, 'There's nothing like the fresh smell of pines.' He couldn't help shivering while admiring the view, 'So beautiful, and clear… if it weren't for the surrounding peaks, I could probably see forever.

'But, I can't believe how cold the nights get, even in the middle of the summer.' With that, Chris reached back inside the camper and grabbed his coat. Bone tired after pulling in late and getting everything set up, he'd dropped it just inside the door on his way to bed last night.

Chris had no sooner zipped his jacket up than his nose picked up the odor of a nearby campfire. 'Even that smells good,' he thought with a smile.

As he glanced around the campgrounds, Chris noticed a tight pair of sexy jeans going into the ladies restroom, and couldn't help wondering, 'Is she taken?' Then with embarrassment, realized, 'Of course she is you dummy. Any gal that good looking would not be alone.'

Suddenly, the wafting aroma of fresh brewed coffee triggered a hunger pain which shifted his thoughts to, 'Breakfast. That's what I need… hope the lodge is open.'

Chris knew that after catering to tourists all weekend, a lot of the local businesses closed on Mondays. And since he owned his own company, he realized, 'I don't blame them. It's my fault anyway for not getting up here on Friday as I'd planned.

'Oh well, at least arriving on Sunday got me a choice spot. Most of the campers had already packed up and left, headed back to the city and the old grind.'

Shaking his head, he thought, 'Hell, I should sell out… or just move my business and live here year round.'

Chris looked towards the lodge and noticed there were no vehicles in the parking lot, 'Damn, bet they're closed. Oh well, won't find out standing here.' With that thought, and since it was only a short distance, he took off on foot, enjoying the scenery and mountain air every step of the way.

He knew before trying the door handle that it was locked. Using his hands to block the glare, Chris leaned forward to peer through the front window. He could see the lights were off and no one was inside.

Then with a chuckle, he wondered out loud, "Why does everyone do that? There's a damn sign on the door, plain as day, 'We're Closed on Mondays'."

Suddenly from behind him came a sexy female voice, "I don't know. But would you believe it took two Mondays in a row before I quit pulling on that stupid handle?"

With shock and surprise, Chris spun around to find the cute lady he'd spotted earlier. She was standing with her fingers tucked into her hip pockets.

While pondering how she ever squeezed anything, including herself, into those tight assed pants, he couldn't help taking the opportunity to study her build, starting from the feet up. When he finally got to her face, he found her grinning, and evidently not very shy when she asked, "Well? Like what you see?"

Red faced, Chris stammered, "Hell miss, I… I'd be lying if I said no. That's for sure."

"Good," she replied. "Then you can drive me down the road to the only café in town that's open, and buy me breakfast. I assume that's what you came down here for?"

With a smile, Chris said, "Let's go, I'm starving. By the way, what's your name."

"Teresa… and yours?"

"Chris… pleasure to meet you Teresa."

"Maybe… we'll see," she replied still smiling.

**********

As they entered the small café, Chris noticed a waitress with a cute smile. She was chatting with a few customers while refilling their coffee cups as she slowly worked her way down the counter.

Teresa laughed, and said, "Down tiger. You'd be wasting your time."

Chris looked puzzled, and asked "Why's that? She married?"

"Nope, but wants to be. Jamie has a one track mind, find a husband and have a family, that's all she's looking for. But… she's too damn picky. Several of the local studs would probably entertain the idea, but she's shot them all down. Now most of them, other than being friendly, shy away from her," Teresa informed him.

"I see," Chris replied.

"Well, with her, that's about all you will do. But, now with me… you just might find what you're looking for," Teresa teased him.

Embarrassed, Chris asked red faced, "And what would that be?"

Teresa's laugh even sounded sexy as she replied, "The eyes don't lie, and yours are speaking volumes. Enough said, let's find a table and get some breakfast. I'm starving."

"Me too," Chris responded, "it might be the mountain air, but up here, I always feel famished in the mornings."

Teresa selected a table by the front windows, Chris was glad, since he never tired of looking at the scenery. They had no sooner sat down, than Jamie was there to take their orders.

After Teresa introduced them, Jamie said, "Nice to meet you," offering her hand, "and welcome to the finest eating place in town… at least on Mondays it is."

Chris and Teresa couldn't help but laugh at Jamie's quip, especially the way she said it.

"My pleasure," Chris replied and shook her hand.

He didn't miss Teresa mumbling under her breath, "You're very generous with all that pleasure." Glancing at her, he had to grin at Teresa's teasing smile.

**********

Just as Chris and Teresa finished their breakfast, two men walked in. One of them noticed Teresa and elbowed his buddy. When the other looked, his eyes lit up and he came over to their table. "Teresa," he smiled, "haven't seen you in few days."

Chris couldn't help but notice that Teresa's eyes had been dancing from the first moment she spotted this guy. "Chuck!" She exclaimed, "Where in the hell have you been?"

About that time she noticed Chuck was checking out Chris with a kind of puzzled, 'Do I know you' look.

"Oh sorry," Teresa said, "Chuck, this is Chris. He's up from the city, taking a few weeks off to clean out his lungs."

Chris chuckled at her light humor and said, "Glad to meet you," as he shook hands with Chuck.

"What, no pleasure?" Teresa laughed.

Red faced, Chris cocked an eyebrow and embarrassingly replied, "Not this time."

After the introduction, Chuck said, "Well I'll catch you later, Teresa," and after excusing himself, returned to join his friend.

"Seems like a nice fellow," Chris said.

"Uh-huh," Teresa uttered as her eyes followed Chuck all the way back to his table.

As she turned her attention back to Chris, he said, "Well if you'll hold the fort down, I need to make a trip to the little boy's room."

Smiling, she said, "No problem… I hope everything comes out all right."

Chris chuckled, "Old joke… but, still funny."

**********

When Chris came back from the restroom, he noticed Teresa was sitting at Chuck's table… and she had taken her coffee cup with her.

Chris immediately had flashes of his teenage years, 'It's been a while since I've played this game. But if my memory serves me right, the guy always loses.'

Since his coffee cup had been refilled while he was gone, Chris went ahead and sat back down.

After about five minutes, there was no sign that Teresa had any intent of returning. She was sitting with her back to Chris, and hadn't even bothered to turn around and look at him.

Being ignored with no hint of direction, Chris had gradually become irritated to the point that he finally finished his last sip and decided to leave.

"Chuck and her go back a ways," Jamie said.

Chris was startled to look up and see the waitress standing at his shoulder. "Oh yeah?" He replied.

"If you sit here long enough, she'll come back over. She always does," Jamie grinned.

Chris wasn't amused, "Well I have a life… which means I don't have time to wait all day. Can you bring me the check, please. I need to get going."

"Do you want me to divide it? She won't mind paying for hers. It won't be the first time," Jamie asked.

"No… that's alright. Just leave it all on one. If nothing else, the experience has been worth it," Chris stated flatly.

Jamie nodded and thought, 'Sure seems like a nice guy. But, if there's one thing Teresa has to offer, it's experience… of all kinds.'

Chris paid the tab and headed out the door. Teresa looked up just in time to see him leave. "I'll be right back," she told Chuck.

Catching up to Chris just as he reached his truck, she grinned and said, "Leaving without saying goodbye? That's not very nice."

Chris turned and replied, "Have places to go, and things to do. Besides, it appears you found what you're looking for."

In a sexy voice, she teased, "Chuck and I are just old friends, that's all."

"No problem," Chris replied, "what you do is your business, not my concern."

"Aw, come on," Teresa begged with a grin. "Are you going to the dance at the lodge tomorrow night?"

"I didn't even know they were having one, but I'll probably be there," he answered.

"Good, it's a date then, see you there," she responded before turning and heading back into the café.

**********

Chris had been sitting at his table, nursing his drink, when the distinct sound of high heels walking out on to the wooden floor demanded his attention. He looked in the direction of the enticing sound, and due to the skirt she was wearing, could only see from the knees down. But even from that limited view, Chris could tell that Jamie had a very sexy pair of legs.

He watched as one of the locals took her in his arms and began to whirl around the dance floor in step with the music. Chris had to admire her suppleness as she followed the man's lead. She certainly knew how to make her partner look good.

A little surge of envy surprised Chris as he found himself wishing it were him holding Jamie at that moment. His fantasy was suddenly interrupted by someone plopping into one of the other chairs at his table.

"Just hang that lasso back on your saddle, cowboy, I already told you where things stand with her. But don't fret, I'm here now," Teresa said, flirting in her usual style.

"Hello Teresa, I see you made it," Chris smiled, unable to help himself. If nothing else, he had already learned that Teresa had the gift to either make you smile… or want to shoot someone.

After pointing out all the locals, and giving Chris the lowdown on them, Teresa said, 'Let's dance, that's what I came for.'

It didn't take Chris long to figure out that besides flirting, Teresa could dance as well. But halfway through the second song, he felt a tap on his shoulder. Glancing around, he wasn't really surprised to see Chuck cutting in.

Before Chris could respond, and without even asking or commenting, Teresa slid into Chuck's arms, and they were off. Chris was left standing there, all alone, slightly embarrassed, but not upset this time. Thinking, 'Been there, done that,' he had expected it. With a shrug of his shoulders, he turned and headed back to his table.

As he sat sipping his drink, the song ended. Chris watched as Chuck and Teresa stayed on the dance floor, talking and laughing while holding each other. When the next song started, they picked up right where they had left off, moving to the music.

Chris shook his head and turned back to his drink when suddenly a familiar voice asked, "Is it proper for a lady to ask a gentleman to dance?"

This was the second time in just two days that he was surprised to look up and see Jamie standing by his shoulder. "Well if you can find a gentleman in this crowd, I think it would be alright," he responded with a smile.

Holding out her hand, she grinned and said, "I've found one. Now get your booty out of that chair and do a lady right."

Taking her hand, he followed her out to the dance floor and gently pulled her into his arms. His other hand landed in that safe, neutral zone between her shoulders and upper hips. Trying not to be offensive, he applied a gentle pressure while slowly opening and closing his fingers in a soft, gentle, reassuring caress.

It felt so natural that before Jamie realized it, she had stepped into him, and was gently nuzzling his neck as her head rested on his shoulder. As they melted together, instead of a first dance, anyone looking would have thought they were long time lovers.

While laughing at something Chuck had said, Teresa glanced over and saw Chris and Jamie dancing together. She was instantly filled with jealousy at how comfortable, and romantic they looked. In anger, she thought, 'How dare Jamie try and step in on my territory.'

As the song began to wind down, Teresa said, "Sorry Chuck, but I need to get back to my date." Without another word, she turned and left him standing there.

Chuck grinned, realizing, 'Some things never change.'

Jamie and Chris both felt the other's reluctance to separate when the song ended, and she didn't miss the fact that Chris looked disappointed.

Realizing he needed to act fast, Chris said, "I wish we could get to know each other better… would you care to join me at my table? If not, at least let me have the next dance?"

Glancing at his table, she noticed Teresa had returned. Jamie's eyes seemed to lessen as she sadly replied, "I'm sorry, but it would appear that you already have company for the evening."

"Not that I invited," he informed her.

She took a moment to study his face. After looking deep into his eyes, Jamie seemed satisfied and countered, "Why don't you join me and my friends instead. We have an empty chair, and that way, three won't end up being a crowd."

Chris grinned, and replied, "It would be my pleasure, especially if I can sit next to you."

He enjoyed the smile she beamed back while simply stating, "Oh… I think that can be arranged."

Chris returned to his table, picked up his drink, and said, "Excuse me, but I'm going to join Jamie and her friends."

Just as he started to walk off, Teresa touted, "You would have a lot better chance of 'getting lucky' with me tonight than you ever will with her."

"But you don't understand," Chris replied.

"Understand what?" Teresa asked.

"I'm not interested in 'getting lucky' with you tonight," Chris flatly stated.

"You don't think I'm pretty enough… sexy enough… or what?" She inquired in irritation.

"Oh, believe me. I think you are more than enough of both," he informed her.

"Then what… ohhh, don't tell me that you don't like girls," she said sarcastically.

With a chuckle, Chris shook his head and responded, "Sometimes I think I like them too much."

Now angry, Teresa sneered, "Then what is Jamie offering that I don't have?"

Just before he turned to walk off, Chris replied, "That's easy, Teresa. You have what I don't need, the chance to 'get lucky' for tonight. Jamie offers what I want… the opportunity to 'get lucky' for life."

As Chris walked over to Jamie's table, he could see that she had already moved the extra chair next to hers. She smiled up at him and patted the empty seat for him to sit down beside her.

Looking at his arm, Jamie said, "I like your tattoo…. If and when the time comes, I hope you'll like mine."

Chris's eyebrow's shot up, "You have a tattoo… where?" He asked glancing at her bare shoulders.

"Right in the small of my back, just above my hips, it's just a small one… a four leaf clover," she informed him.

With a puzzled expression, Chris questioned, "Why a four leaf clover?"

"Because all through high school, instead of Jamie, everybody used my nickname," she replied.

Chris cocked an eyebrow and jokingly inquired, "Your nickname was 'Four Leaf Clover'?"

"No dummy," she chuckled and playfully slapped his arm, "everyone called me 'Lucky'."

For the life of her, Jamie couldn't figure out what the hell she'd said that was so damn funny, Chris couldn't quit laughing.

Lucky for life!!

AnonymousAnonymousover 1 year ago

A good well told series of events in several peoples lives over a period of a few days ending with a point made. It is not a story.A story has a beginning, middle and ending...Readers are stuck with the middle...To bad,it easily could have been an enjoyable tale. You do express a lot in small amount of writing, but leave a reader hanging...JZK
