Chapter 5 Stupid Parties!
"Hey, it's me." Abraxis said wearily after I answered my phone. "Nos and I are going out to a party tonight. I was wondering if you wanted to come with."
I sighed, and looked between Lauviah and Johnny, feeling the pit forming in my stomach. I wasn't supposed to party with him; and I knew if I did Lauviah would be absolutely livid.
"Please, Kara. I would really prefer it if you came with." My brother practically begged.
I rested my head in my hand. "We can't do anything else? Like see a movie or anything?"
"No," he snapped. "Are you coming or not? I'm not going to ask again."
I shook my head morosely. "Yes, fine, I'll be there in a few minutes."
Abraxis hung up, and I gathered my stuff.
Lauviah was the first to look over at me. "What are you doing?"
I sighed. "Lucy, please don't be mad...Abraxis wants me to go out with him. I'm not going to drink, but I don't want my brother drinking himself stupid with only Nos watching over him. I need to make sure he doesn't injure or kill himself somehow, and I'm not sure Nos is exactly capable of doing that."
Her face turned blank, but I could see the fiery, hell-fueled hatred burning in her eyes.
I swallowed nervously.
"You promised that the next time he asked you to party that you would say no." she growled through clenched teeth.
"I know," my voice broke. "I have. I've refused all the other times. But I just don't want to see him end up in the hospital. Please, Lucy. Please, I need to watch over him. He's one of the few people I actually care about. I would be devastated if anything happened, and I think he's suicidal right now; he's pretty torn up over Trash—I mean, Trish."
"Ugh, god—fine! Go babysit your older brother. But not one drop of alcohol!"
"I pinky-swear," I held out my little finger.
She locked hers with mine. "You break this promise and I'll beat you senseless. Tell your brother there won't be any exceptions."
I nodded and leaned down to kiss her goodbye; giving her a sweet, passionate kiss.
I hugged Johnny, and left out through the back door, then walking half a block to the bachelor pad. Nos opened the door for me, and I wandered into the kitchen, where Abraxis was smoking a bowl.
"How long are you going to keep this up, Doby?" I asked, giving him a pertinent death glare.
He blew the smoke into my face. "As long as I damn well please."
"Do you think that's smart, big brother? I mean it's not even legal. I don't want you to get into trouble." I pleaded with him.
"It will be soon enough," Nosferatu interjected, coming in from behind me and then taking the bong from my brother and taking a long hit. "Right now they're moving for decriminalization, and there have been rumors of Washington passing a bill in the next couple years to fully legalize it as a medicinal and recreational agent. It will be taxed and marketed in much the same way cigarettes and alcohol are. Just wait."
Abraxis shrugged. "See? No big deal. Besides, I'm not working in the auto-body section anymore. They promoted me to a desk job. Now I only handle insurance claims, there's no reason for random drug testing. What could I possibly do to injure myself while I'm high? Give myself a paper-cut? I can do that sober."
Nos and my brother both laughed.
"Amen, brah," Nos took another hit from the bong.
I rolled my eyes. "Alright, fine. Do whatever you want. And just so you know, my girlfriend is mad at me for going out with you guys, but since you were begging me I told her I had to come. But I'm not drinking any alcohol."
Nosferatu scoffed. "She always finds something to be pissed about. She'll get over it."
Abraxis stared. "How can you go out and party if you're not going to drink alcohol? That doesn't even make sense. If you're not going to drink with me, then what's even the fucking point? You might as well just stay home."
"I can party sober, Abraxis. It's not hard. I'm sorry that you're so jaded by the world that you can't, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy myself without drinking copious amounts of alcohol." I glared at them both.
"Just have at least one drink. Please?" Abraxis begged, giving me a pleading look.
"Damnit Abraxis, if I do she will know, and I promised I wouldn't. If I break that promise, she said she would be me senseless, and there are no exceptions." I argued.
Nosferatu laughed. "She's going to beat you senseless? With what, exactly? The rubber dong you guys use? I may not have talked to her for a couple years, but I know she is mostly bark. She won't actually do anything to you—you wouldn't be quite as useful to her anymore, and she tends to hang around others who have something to offer."
I flushed. "You apparently don't know her the way I do, then. People change a lot in four years, Nos. If you're implying she's with me only because she needs to be, you're completely wrong. She loves me, and I love her. Our relationship isn't based solely on sex and money."
"Oh, okay, so it's just her boyfriends she gets on the sides that she uses, then? I guess it would make sense that she trusts a girl more with a relationship, but you're right, it's none of my business, and I don't care to make it my business. But I know one drink won't kill you, and she won't even know you had it by the time we get back." He derided.
Abraxis stared at us. "Are you saying that you know my sister's girlfriend?"
Nosferatu rolled his eyes. "Oh, yeah. I'll just leave it at that."
Abraxis shook his head. "Well actually, you not drinking may be useful to us—you can be our designated driver so Nos and I can get completely shitfaced and not worry about hitting poles or trees."
"That sounds perfect. That way I don't have to break my promise and either of you won't kill us all as we try to come home." I agreed.
"We're wasting time, you know. Let's get out of here." Nosferatu took one last hit from the bong, and set it down on the kitchen table. Abraxis got his hoodie, and soon enough we were out the door.
I don't know how my brother does it, but he always seems to know exactly where a party is going on. It's like he has a radar inside his head for house parties, or something. The house, which was larger than the ones we usually attended, was up on the North Side, and filled with what seemed to be a mix of people my brother's age all the way down to seniors like myself.
There were at least a hundred people in the house alone, and outside in the backyard there were probably another seventy-five. The house was completely packed to the brim. It turned out Abraxis knew most of the people who were hosting it, and he and Nos helped themselves to the kitchen's make-shift bar, mixing up insane-looking drinks that I couldn't even put names to.
We headed outside, and found an empty patio table to sit at, just taking in the stimuli around us. Whoever owned this house was seriously rich—at least at my parents' level or above, since they had two hot tubs, tons of patio furniture, a fire pit, a heated pool (which a bunch of crazy people were utilizing), as well as a tea garden fitted with a small pond and waterfall feature and complete with a tiny bridge that led into the garden path of perfectly pruned trees and bushes.
Nosferatu and Abraxis were really tearing into their drinks, and as I was looking at the scenery, I managed to catch the middle of their conversation.
"I swear that he's gay! The way he was hugging you and shit the other night—come on, prove me wrong!" Nosferatu guffawed.
Abraxis rolled his eyes. "I told you, his sexual preference is towards women. I assume at this point that if he was, he would have started to hit on me already, and he hasn't. Besides, even if he was, I wouldn't have a problem with it. He's a fantastic guy. I don't know why it bothers you so damned much. Just let it go, will you?"
I frowned at them, trying to figure out what was going on. "Who's gay?"
Nosferatu shook his head. "Your brother here has a little bromance going on with a local DJ I have lovingly nicknamed Doctor P, since that's his favorite dubstep artist."
I looked over at him. "And who is that?"
Abraxis rolled his eyes again. "It's nobody. Don't worry about it, because you will never meet him, and I intend to keep it that way."
I was taken aback. "Wow, well fine. I guess I'll just stop caring about your life. And besides, what do you two care if this guy is gay? There's absolutely nothing wrong with being gay, and if either of you two have a problem with gay guys, you might as well just stop talking to me altogether; I'm bisexual and two of my best friends are gay."
"I don't have a problem with the gay community." Nosferatu bit back. "I never have, and I never will. I'm just weirded out because Doberman's DJ bromance has all the hobbies of a straight guy, but then he does shit like go to the mall to get massages, manicures, and his eyebrows waxed. It's fucking weird!"
Abraxis shook his head. "Okay now you're just exaggerating, asshole. He doesn't wax his eyebrows."
I looked at them funny. "Is it an unspoken rule that straight guys can't care about how they look, or something? Is that why you're picking on this person so hard, Nos?"
Nosferatu grumbled discontentedly. "No, that's not why. It just seems like he should be gay and I'm sort of waiting for him to come out of the closet, but he just continues not to and since I haven't actually seen him with a girl once, I don't even know what the hell to think."
"Well that's really weird because every time he walks through a club, he's a fucking chick magnet. They swarm around him on the dance floor, they follow him around the club, and when we sit in the VIP room, at least five girls are up in his shit, sitting on his lap or flirting with him." Abraxis commented.
"And does he ever make a move on any of them?" Nos asked.
"Yes, actually, he does!" Abraxis answered fervently.
Nosferatu rolled his eyes exaggeratedly. "Until I see him with a girl, I'm still saying Doctor P is gay, and that's that. I'm going to go get another drink."
Abraxis sighed heavily. "Get me another one, too, man."
Nosferatu left the table, leaving my brother and me in an awkward silence.
"Are you feeling okay, big brother? You've never actually begged me to do something." I finally broke the silence.
He looked over slowly. "I'm trying to keep my mind off the horrible images that have been burned into my thoughts for the last couple weeks. It haunts me night and day. God, that stupid, evil, slut succubus...I can't believe it. You were right the whole time. I really wish now that I had been there the night you punched her, I'm sure it was a wonderful sight to behold. I can see you doing it in my head, but it's not as good as actually seeing it happen."
I nodded. "I know, Doby. But think of it this way—it's over now, and you can move on to better things. I don't know, Lucy's pretty cute—you might like her a lot. Besides, I wouldn't put anyone less with my amazing older brother. You deserve the best, and she is the best as far as I'm concerned."
He laughed sarcastically at me. "Yeah, right. Because dating again is exactly what I want to do right now after I fucked up a three-year relationship. I was going to marry that fucking thing. That's the part that gets me the most. I put a ring on her fucking finger and she does this to repay me. Besides, it'd be weird being with a girl I know has already been with my sister."
I shrugged. "It was just a suggestion, big brother. And by the way, what did happen to that ring?"
Abraxis squinted his eyes to a close. "After I saw—you know—I yelled at her and told her we were through, that I had already moved all my shit out of the place and taken myself off the lease. I told her to take the ring I bought and shove it up her twat since it was apparently meaningless to her anyways, and something about how it might give her some satisfaction that I never could. I yelled a little more, I can't remember what, and then I stormed out of the house."
I looked at him sadly. "That's terrible, Abraxis. I'm really sorry. Even though I've been with Nos only a couple weeks, I know that I would be devastated if I saw him with some girl sitting on his dick."
He sighed. "Speaking of which, I better go find him; I need my drink. I'll be right back."
Abraxis bolted away from the table, leaving me all by myself to watch the hustle of the party.
"Kara?!" I heard a girl's voice from behind me.
I turned my head to look, and saw that Evelyn was there with her friend Sherri. Evelyn walked over to me, leaving Sherri to dance with a group of guys. Evelyn took my brother's seat, and sipped on a FourLoko.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
"My brother and my boyfriend brought me here. What about you?" I tapped on the table absent-mindedly.
"Sherri knows the guy who lives here, and I guess we're having a pre-graduation celebration while his parents are out of town. Good place to get laid, too, I suppose. We've been here for a couple hours now, and it's turning into quite the party. Sherri and I were just flirting with this cute guy named Nos. He was joking about having a threesome, but we think maybe he wasn't really joking. I know Sherri wants to bang him for sure." Evelyn rambled nonchalantly, continuing to sip heavily on her malt beverage.
I stared at her blankly. "Nos? Nos as in Nosferatu?"
She nodded. "Yeah, why? Do you know him?"
I felt all emotion drain from me as I went into shock. "Yeah, he's my boyfriend."
She looked about as shocked as I felt. "Well, then. I guess I'll tell her not to get with him, then, since that's kind of rude. But he's totally flirting with everyone like he's single, and hasn't said one word about you at all. Maybe you should go do some damage control."
"Maybe," I mumbled.
Evelyn brushed back her brunette-and-pink bangs. "Hey, I gotta get going, she and I are going to hit the hot tub. Text me and let me know how everything goes, okay? I'll see you at school on Monday—try to have a better Friday night, and a better weekend."
I nodded as she left, still feeling the gravity of the situation. Abraxis and Nos had now both been gone for some time, and I decided that maybe I should go check on both of them to make sure they were doing okay.
I looked around outside, and didn't see either of them, so I got up slowly and made my way inside. As soon as I looked inside the kitchen, I was relatively annoyed to see that Nosferatu was in there, and had three girls standing around him and giggling loudly. He started poking one of them, and then attempted to tickle her as she and her friends squealed loudly.
I suddenly knew exactly how my brother felt—and I wondered if I was ever going to be able to unsee the image before me. I stared at him dumbfoundedly for a while, completely incapable of even thinking. Finally I decided that as much as I wanted to, I knew it would be stupid to create drama at that big of a party; and as I walked over to Nos, I stayed as calm as I possibly could.
"Kara!" he yelled happily, opening his arms for a hug.
I decided to go for it, jumping into his arms and giving a fake giggle. As soon as he let me down, I could tell I had completely changed the atmosphere—the girls were giving me jealous glares.
"Hey there, I'm Kara. I'm Nosferatu's girlfriend," I introduced myself with the slightest hint of a sneer, holding my hand out for a (not-so) friendly handshake. They looked between us both and wandered away.
"Text me later!" Nos called after them; just adding insult to injury so that it felt like knives were stabbing me in the heart.
"What are you doing, Nos?" I asked in a feigned cheerful voice.
"I came in here to get a drink," he replied obliviously.
I rolled my eyes. "No, I meant—ugh, never mind! We'll talk about that later! Where the hell is my brother?"
Nos shrugged. "I don't know, he was here with me for a while, and then he walked off with one of the girls we had been talking to. I don't keep tabs on him, you know. He's free to do whatever he wants."
I closed my eyes and gave an annoyed sigh. "Alright, I'm going to go find him, I guess. Meet me back at the table outside."
"Alright, see you outside," Nos turned around to the bar, and started mixing a drink.
I wandered the entire house, trying to find my brother and this mystery girl he had probably hooked up with—I wanted desperately to tell him what had just happened, and how I was starting to feel shitty and wanted to go home. After searching the entire premises twice, including the front, side, and back yards, both levels and the basement, I decided that whatever wormhole he had disappeared through would eventually spit him back out at the patio table we had started at, and returned there.
Nosferatu had apparently forgotten to meet me there, because even after twenty minutes of searching, our table was still empty. I felt empty, too. I sat down, all by myself, and started playing games on my phone to pass the time. Lauviah had been right for once—this definitely wasn't worth it—even if I had wanted to keep an eye on my brother.
Finally I heard a chair scrape against the concrete, and I looked up to see Abraxis join me again finally.
He sighed heavily. "Have you been here all by yourself all this time?"
I nodded. "At least the last twenty minutes. The twenty minutes before that I spent looking for you, and just before that I saw a friend who informed me that Nosferatu had offered her and her friend for a threesome, and then I went inside and saw him flirting with a bunch of girls, while you apparently walked off with one of them to God-knows-where."
He sighed again. "Why am I absolutely not surprised?"
I frowned at my brother. "What do you mean?"
"He does this every time we go out. He's a walking sex machine, and he enjoys it. I don't know why I thought having a girlfriend would change that about him. Sorry you had to witness that first hand, but that's what he does when we go out. He drinks, he flirts with girls, sometimes he fucks them." Abraxis told me.
I felt my jaw drop off its hinges. "Has he fucked anyone else while we've been together?"
Abraxis shrugged. "I don't have the slightest idea."
I flushed with rage. "Abraxis, I'm not feeling very good. I want to go home. Now."
"Yeah, alright. I've gotten my fill of this place. Let's get out of here before that blonde chick finds me and thinks I have any interest in her." He said, getting up slowly, and wobbling as he righted himself.
I glared at him. "That's where you went? You went to go have a one-time thing with some stupid girl? Did you even use a condom?"
"Duh," he retorted. "I'm not stupid. I'm not going to get her diseases or let her trap me with a kid."
"Christ, Abraxis." I grumbled. "I hope you used a condom with me, too."
"Are you seriously still on about the Rohypnol thing? We didn't do anything, and if you don't shut up about it I'm going to tell everyone that it never happened and you were having delusional dreams after you were roofied." He snapped at me.
"Whatever, asshole. Let's find my boyfriend and get out of here." I snapped back.
Abraxis led me back into the house, and Nos was now sitting on the couch, with the group of girls I had scared off previously surrounding him. One was even sitting on his lap—though I couldn't tell if she was just sitting—or fucking him.
Abraxis stopped me with his hand, and gave me a look as he shook his head. He then walked over there, told the ladies to split, and talked to Nos in a low voice, so that I couldn't hear them over the music. Nosferatu looked over at me remorsefully several times, and then Abraxis helped him up off the couch. He stumbled as he came towards me.
"Hey, I'm sorry—I didn't know where you went," Nosferatu soothed, reaching out to touch my face—and my face burned with his caress. I looked away from him so I wouldn't yell; or worse, cry.
