Ever since she was born nineteen years ago, my sister had been a pain in the ass. Everything she does seem to be motivated by wanting to annoy others, especially me. She played loud music on mornings during weekends when I was sleeping. If I was watching TV in the living room she would come and change the channel. If I was reading a book she would come and try to distract me. If I was taking a shower in the afternoon she would sneak in and take the towels. At first I had tried to fight back, but that only seemed to spur her on, so I ended up just ignoring her as much as I could. When she played loud music I would put a headset on and listen to my own music. When she changed the channel I just left the living room. If she tried to distract me while reading I put the book down and grabbed something to drink. She stole the towels; I just walked calmly out of the bathroom to the closet and grabbed new ones. I could tell it made her mad, but it didn't escalate things so it was a decent compromise.

I was sitting in the living room watching TV when dad caught my sister Sarah fucking some random guy in his home office yet again. I hadn't noticed my sister had a guy over. Apparently she thought she would be safe since my dad had been at work. This time she had crossed the final line and he was angry as hell. He was angrier than I had ever seen him before. He grabbed the guy and threw him out hard onto the tiles outside the front door, then returned to get his clothes and threw them as hard as he could at him. Needless to say the guy ran for his life. My dad came back into the house, pointed at my sister and said two words "Follow me!"

For the first time in my life I saw my sister obeying an order without complaint or hesitation. I stopped myself from following them to see what would happen. I didn't want to get involved in this if I didn't need to. I didn't need to however, as I heard my dad yelling from the hall. I couldn't hear the specifics but the gist of it was she was grounded and locked up in her room for the next three days. She would get dinner in the evening and allowed a bathroom visit two times a day.

He returned to the living room holding her laptop and cell phone and put it into the chest we had over in the corner. Only my dad had the key and he used the chest to take stuff from us for a while to punish us.

He turned and looked at me still angry, but seemed to have calmed down a bit, he said "Tom, would you mind helping locking Sarah's window so she can't get out that way?"

"Sure I guess. You okay dad? I've never seen you this angry before"

"I will be once the window is locked. Your sister just drives me crazy sometimes, so I want to really scare her this time"

With that last comment I followed him to the garage, then to the window with some tools. We arrived just in time to see Sarah opening the window and crawling out. When she saw us she panicked and hurried back inside. My dad and I made sure no one could open the window from the inside, and then went back into the house to relax, a job well done.

I could hear my sister screaming in anger for at least four hours the first day but her screams diminished more and more in volume until it finally stopped. My mom brought her dinner while my dad made sure she didn't try to escape. Having eaten earlier I was just lying on my bed listening to music, so I saw everything. Sarah had tried to escape out the door as soon as it opened but as soon as she saw dad she froze, then backed away into her room quickly.

Around 10:30 as I was getting ready to go to sleep I heard her pounding the wall and screaming as loud as she could again. I guess she was trying to prevent us sleeping. Not a great plan as what happened next would prove. My dad went into her room and tied her hands behind her back.

"Make one more sound and I'll come in here and put a gag on your mouth as well. Do you understand Sarah?" Dad said menacingly.

She looked like she was going to protest, but thought better of it and said "yes sir. It won't happen again"

That was the second time I saw her ever obey a direct order from dad without any complaint or hesitation. I couldn't help but smile, finally the bitch was getting what she deserved. Relieved I could finally get some sleep I got under the covers and drifted off.

The next day my mom came into my room and woke me up.

"Tom, I need to talk with you"

Still groggy from waking up I said in a slurred voice "can't we talk later?"

"I'm sorry but we can't. As you know Jack and I had planned a two week getaway on Saturday"

"Err... I'm getting the feeling you are about to tell me some really bad news" I responded still tired, but waking up worried about the news I was afraid to receive.

"Dad and I are headed out to shop for deadbolt for the doors and windows, and buy enough food for two weeks. I'm sure you can guess why"

"Does that mean I have to find somewhere to stay for two weeks?" I asked hoping it would be that, and not what I feared she was about to say.

"Not exactly"

Before she could say more I said in a panicked voice "Oh god no. Do I have to put up with the bitch for two whole weeks now?"

"Yes, I'm afraid so. We'll make it up to you when we get back. Anything you want within reason, so take these two weeks to think about that. And don't call your sister a bitch"

"Fuck fuck fuck" I thought to myself. This seemed like I was being punished more than Sarah.

Sighing deeply I said "Okay. Just don't be surprised if the entire house has been demolished by the time you get back"

"I wouldn't worry about that. Dad is in her room making it clear you are in charge while we are gone and if she steps out of line, her punishment continues after we get back. And we need to password protect your laptop and phone so she can't use those" mom said.

"I've already taken care of that. She has tried to use my phone and laptop plenty times before."

"Good. We'll see you later tonight. And I would appreciate it if you tried to make up with your sister while we are gone. I know you've never been on good terms, but dad and I are hoping this could at least let you two get to know each other a little better" my mom said.

"I'll try to, but she'll probably react to it like she has in the past" I said.

"Thanks Tom, we really do appreciate it. You can go get some sleep now, there's some ice cream in the fridge if you want it later"

And with that she hurried out of my room, and called out "Jack, we need to get going. We have a lot to take care of today"

Dad called back "I'll be right there honey, give me a sec"

I got out of bed and closed the door to my room. I definitely needed a nap later, but before that I wanted to make up some kind of plan for mending fences with my sister these next two weeks. If I was going to be stuck in the house with her I didn't want to fight. Maybe offering her some ice cream when I woke up would be a good start. Or just try to talk with her for a bit about what she wanted to do while we were locked up. Anything that could help calm her down would be very welcome right now.

I got back into bed and started drifting off again to the sweet relief of sleep.

I woke up and made my decision. I would knock on my sister's door and ask if she wanted some ice cream or something to drink.

I knocked three times then asked "Sarah, do you want some ice cream or something to drink?"

I waited half a minute and when no reply came I walked down into the living room to watch some TV. Even though I finally had the chance to watch TV without my sister randomly changing the channel, I couldn't find anything I wanted to watch. Not having anything to do I just walked towards my room when I heard Sarah ask "Tom, is that you?" quietly.

It caught me completely by surprise but I hurried to answer "Yes it's me. Do you want some ice cream or something to drink Sarah?"

"No, I have to pee. Could you open the door and let me go to the bathroom?" she asked.

"How do I know I can trust you? If I let you out and you tell dad, he will be mad at me as well"

"Okay, I'll just try to hold it until they come back"

Thinking this could be a chance for us to at least be civil to each other while we were locked up I said "I'm willing to let you out on two conditions. Number one is that you don't try to escape. Number two is that for the next two weeks we turn over a new leaf. We forget about the past so both of us can get through this without having to fight all the time"

My sister took a while to think, and then said "Okay. I can do that if you can"

"Step back while I'm unlocking the door" I said.

I heard the sounds of footsteps so I unlocked the door and opened it carefully.

I backed away and let her out of her room and then said "I'm choosing to trust you here. You got five minutes to pee and we'll take it from there"

When she walked past me to the bathroom I could see that she had been crying earlier. She didn't say anything or look at me but just walked nervously towards the bathroom.

"I will see you in five minutes, okay Sarah?"

"Yes and thank you for this, I know you won't believe me but I do appreciate it" she said before closing the door to the bathroom.

Perhaps it was foolish of me but I decided to go down to the kitchen and grab some ice cream, two spoons and two plates, and then walked back to her room, hoping this would be a good start do my mom's request to try to get along.

My trust was rewarded with my sister coming out of the bathroom and walked over to me with a look of surprise, seeing the ice cream and plates in my hands.

"Do you want some ice cream? If you want we can just sit here and talk about the next two weeks while we eat?" I asked.

"Sure, but why are you being so nice to me? You usually just ignore me"

"I just want to start our time in the house well. It will be nice for a change not to fight all the time and just get along for a change" I answered.

Sitting down and grabbing a plate and spoon she said "I'll try but it will be weird at first I think. I can't remember us talking with each other without getting at each other's throats"

"Yeah it probably will be at first. Do you have any plans for what we are going to do while we are in lockdown?"

"Not really. I was worried that you would abuse being in charge to make me do stuff for you" she said.

"I can't say it didn't cross my mind at first, but I think mom is right that this could be a chance to get to know each other a little better. So how about we start by taking turns asking each other questions while we eat ice cream?"

"Okay, I'll go first; if we weren't in lockdown what would you be doing the next two weeks?" she asked.

"I don't know. I didn't have anything planned but going out to drink with my friends a few times was a likely possibility. What about you?"

"I don't know really. I let dad catch me on purpose to relieve my boredom but I didn't expect this. I guess this last time was the straw the broke the camel's back"

"Is that why it seems that you sometimes go out of your way to bother others?" I asked

"I don't know, maybe. I'm just so bored all the time and nothing I do does anything to change it for very long. Did you start to ignore me because you wanted to annoy to me by taking away the fun, or was it because it was just easier than fighting all the time?" she asked.

"A little of both, at the start it was just to try to avoid fighting all the time, but seeing how annoyed you got did give some satisfaction. So, being bored is pretty much why you do all those things?" I asked.

"I think so. Fighting with you always took away my boredom, even after we walked away both angry. I don't even know why we started. I guess it's just normal brother/sister stuff, but I do regret it ending up being the only contact we had with each other. Can you believe that?" she said.

"It's hard to wrap my mind around; I always thought you just hated me so you took your frustrations out on me" I replied.

"I thought you hated me too, but it was the only contact we had. When you started ignoring me it really hurt, as it felt like my brother was gone for good"

"I never really thought about it like that. One day I just had enough and made a conscious decision to just stop cold. Maybe that was the wrong choice"

Suddenly remembering that mom and dad didn't say when they would be back I asked my sister "Anyway, with the danger of pissing you off, I don't know when mom and dad will get back so if you don't mind could you let me take you back to your room? I'll go get anything you need so you can try to avoid some boredom. Maybe you could come up with something for us to do when mom and dad leaves? I'm sorry but I don't think making dad angrier will bode well for either of us at this point" I said, worried this would tear apart the progress we had made in the last few minutes.

"I'll do it on one condition. While mom and dad are gone we cook dinner together every night, oh and if you don't mind I would like some sheets of paper and some pencils. It's a bit embarrassing to admit, but trying to draw things with precision makes the day to day go by faster"

"Deal, if you go to the kitchen with the plates, I'll go get you the paper" I said.

I did worry she would try to run out the door, but I thought at a time like this it would be better to show some trust, even though the consequences could turn really ugly for both of us. But the reward of getting the chance to get along my with my sister to make the new two weeks bearable was too good to pass up.

Again my trust was rewarded by her walking to her room and accepting the paper and pencils with a thank you and then closed the door to let me lock it.

Outside the door not knowing if she could hear me or not, I said "I hope dad lets you out tomorrow so we can talk some more"

And with that I went into my room to listen to some music. Today had started terrible but things were looking up, the next two weeks could turn out to be nicer than any of us thought, and might help change how my sister and I will treat each other in the future.

My parents arrived home around 7:30. Dad carried bag after bag after bag into the house. They weren't kidding when they said they were going shopping. Mom went up to my sister's room and went inside to talk with her. I went back into my room, not exactly hiding but definitely trying to avoid having to help dad lock me and my sister up for two weeks. It was his decision so he'd better do all the work.

Dad knocked on the door and entered before waiting for a reply and then said "Tom, your mother would like to talk to you when she has finished talking with Sarah"

"What does she want to talk about?" I asked.

"I'm not sure actually, she just told me she wanted to talk with you and Sarah tonight before cooking dinner" my dad said.

"Alright, anyway I see you guys went all out shopping, huh?" I said.

"Yeah, pretty much. You'd be surprised how much of it isn't just food too. I'll go get started on dinner, your mom will be here in a second" he finished, and then walked out of my room.

My mom would indeed be in, in a second. My dad had barely left the room and closed the door before I heard my mom knocking. Like my dad she didn't wait for a reply and just walked in.

"Hey Tom, I just talked with Sarah and she told me what you did for her. Don't worry, I'm not mad and I won't tell dad. I just wanted to start out by saying I'm proud of you for taking the first step in getting along"

"You did tell me to try and get along with her. So, dad said you wanted to talk with me about something?" I asked.

"Your dad and I picked up two disposable cell phones that can only call my number or your dads. We want you to give us an update two times a day. The first call before breakfast, the second before dinner."

"Wow, I didn't know you could limit the numbers you could call on those things" I said.

"Neither did we, but we asked about how we could make sure you could contact us but nobody else. Apparently they get that question a lot."

"Mom, is there any chance you could let Sarah out for a few hours tomorrow? I said I would ask for her, and if she said what happened today then I think she's proven she can be trusted, at least a little bit" I asked.

"I will have to talk to dad about it. I think it might not be a bad idea actually. That way she won't see you as just another of her captors but rather as an ally. I can't promise anything though. Your dad is still pretty angry" she said.

"Thanks mom, I think it would mean a lot to her to get a few hours of freedom right now" I said.

"I have to go help your dad with dinner. It's probably a good idea if you stay here while I go talk to dad about it"

Dinner was a quiet affair. Neither mom nor dad said much and I followed their lead. I wondered if they had had a fight about letting Sarah out of her room for a few hours tomorrow. I finished my dinner before they did so I offered to take Sarah's dinner up to her room. My mom said that would be nice before my dad could say anything.

I knocked on Sarah's door and said "Sarah? I have your dinner for you. Can I come in?"

"Come in Tom" was all she said.

Unlocking the door I entered and saw how much of a mess her room was. She was usually pretty neat, but being trapped like this seemed to have changed that. Even the drawings were scattered on the floor, though they were very well drawn in my opinion.

"Hey Sarah, where do you want your dinner?" I asked

"On the floor is fine if you can find an empty spot"

"I hope dad lets you out tomorrow for a few hours, enjoy your dinner"

I had a lot of trouble trying to fall asleep that night, my mind swirling with a million thoughts. Could we really get along? What the hell are we supposed to do to not be bored out of our minds? What did they expect out of those status reports? It's not like much can happen when we are stuck in the house. What if they didn't buy enough food? And what did dad mean by saying most of the stuff they bought wasn't even food.

It felt like I had barely fallen asleep when I was woken up by mom.

"Hey Tom, dad agreed to let your sister out for a few hours on one condition. You two have to be near each other while she is out. Your dad doesn't trust her and I have to help him preparing the house for the next two weeks"

"I guess I can live through that. When does this start?" I asked still very tired.

"When you are ready to go eat breakfast, I'll go ask her if she's okay with the arrangement as well, I'll be right back"

Even though it was probably a good idea to get out of bed now so my sister didn't have to wait, I decided I needed a little more sleep if we were going to be together for an extended period of time. I'm not sure how long I slept, but mom came into my room and woke me up again.

"Get up sweetie, its eleven 'o'clock already, and I think your sister is starting to get impatient"

"Okay, do I have time for a bath or does it have to be right now?" I asked

"You can take a bath later; your sister really wants her freedom after I told her the news"

"Okay, okay, I'll be right out"

Walking into the kitchen I was surprised to see my sister already sitting at the table eating cereal.

"Hey Sarah, I hear we will be spending a lot of time together today"

"Yeah, I hope you are okay with it. I was really surprised to hear you had asked mom if I could be let out for a few hours. Thank you for that" she said.

"Without ruining the moment, it was more to start out our captivity in a good way, rather than a bad one. Do you know if mom and dad are leaving late tonight or early in the morning?"

"Mom said they leave around nine 'o'clock. I get a few hours out, and then it's back into my room again. Dad says you can't lock me out before tomorrow morning though" she said.
