“I’ll stay up with you,” Brian offered.
She smiled at him and said, “That’s sweet Brian, but you need the rest. You go to bed and I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Are you sure?” he asked.
“I’m sure,” she replied, reaching out to touch him on the shoulder. His concern for her was touching and she wanted nothing more than to spend a night sitting up with him. “I’ll take care of Nick and you two go on. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Brian watched her for a moment as Howie took hold of his arm. “Come on. She’s right. We’re not doing anybody any good by staying up.”
He smiled at her one last time. “Good night,” he said. As he walked back down the hallway to his bunk bed, he couldn’t help but think again how Jennifer had taken over their lives, touching and caring for each one of him. Smiling to himself, he realized that he loved her and wondered how he was going to tell her.
