Mending a Broken Heart Ch. 04byIslandLilly©
Hello all! It's been a while since I have been able to continue on with my story, but I don't plan to stop until it's complete. I highly recommend reading parts 1,2,and 3 of this story, for they explain the background to these two characters. Let me know what you think of part 4! Enjoy!
After getting dressed, Stephanie and Nadia headed toward the kitchen where Sandra, Becky, Tonya, and Courtney were all sharing a pot of coffee and eating delicious croissants.
"Good afternoon ladies," Stephanie beamed.
Giggling, "sounds like you two had a busy morning" smirked Courtney. As the other woman shot Nadia sly smiles, Nadia felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment.
"Sorry ladies I hope we didn't wake you," Nadia said with unease.
Chuckling louder, "Oh don't worry girl we're all just teasing you" said Tonya. "We're just glad you're enjoying your time here."
"Come here little one just ignore them," smiled Stephanie. "Have a seat and I'll make you a cup of coffee."
"Don't feel embarrassed Nadia, we're all women here. And besides, you seem like a really cool person and we're happy you and Steph are hitting it off," shot Becky.
Stephanie took a seat at the table next to Nadia, handed her a cup of coffee and croissant, and gave her a kiss on her forehead. "Relax baby," she whispered into Nadia's ear.
Feeling more at ease, Nadia enjoyed her afternoon brunch as she listened to the conversations of the other women.
"So what's the plan for today ladies?" asked Sandra.
"Some neighbors of mine are having a house party tonight and we're all invited," answered Courtney. "I think we should have a light meal, get some booze in us, and head on over to get hammered!"
"Here here!" smiled Tonya, as everyone laughed in agreement.
For the afternoon, everyone decided to split with different activities in mind before regrouping back at the house. Sandra and Courtney headed into town to try out a yoga class while Becky and Tonya went shopping for new outfits for the party. Stephanie and Nadia however, decided to stay back and enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the beach.
"Don't forget we're meeting back here at 5 ladies," shouted Courtney as she and Sandra headed out the door.
"Alone at last," smiled Stephanie as she pulled Nadia in for a hug.
The two lovers kissed softly, caressing each other's cheek with the playful running of fingers through each other's hair. Nadia stared into Stephanie's green eyes with the occasional glance to her luscious lips and lost herself in that moment. The feeling of happiness and completeness overcame Nadia as all she wanted to do was pull Stephanie against her own and never stop kissing her.
"You ready to see the beach? I love the feeling of the hot sand against my feet!" interrupting Nadia's thoughts.
Stephanie grabbed Nadia's hand and the two women headed straight toward the ocean. The feeling of the hot sand accompanied by the sound of the crashing waters were peaceful, giving off a feeling of beautiful solitude. Although the beach was crowded with laughing neighbors and families, it was like they were all miles away.
Stephanie laid a beach towel down, and the two women sat together under the hot sun enjoying each other's company. Hours had passed by as the two lovers shared fond stories of family gatherings, memories of friends, and intimate stories of past loves.
"Steph, can I ask you something? You don't have to answer if you don't want to."
"What's on your mind baby girl?"
"Well I know that Maxine was your first true love, but has anyone ever come close? I mean in terms of you loving someone again and wanting to be with them?"
Nadia watched the wrinkles on Stephanie's forehead form as she squinted her eyes and stared intently into the sand. A long pause had passed as Nadia started to question whether or not she should have asked that question.
"I'm sorry I shouldn't have.." but was quickly interrupted with Stephanie's "No."
"Really? No one has even came close to being under the category of potential?"
Nadia knew as soon as she asked for that confirmation that she shouldn't have pushed the subject further. Deep down she hoped Stephanie toyed with the idea of Nadia being one of those potential mates. She wanted to be with Stephanie and hoped that she had at least entertained the idea of being with Nadia as well.
"I told you I have a hard time letting myself fall in love with someone. Yes I have been in relationships after Maxine, but they've never come close to how I felt for her. Look little one maybe I should have said something earlier, I enjoy being with you and spending time with you, but I hope you don't have any expectations of us being together. It's just that I have a hard time letting people in and letting myself be with someone. You are really sweet, but I just need to be honest with you about this okay."
Stephanie's response was a reality check for Nadia, for she had fantasized about the idea of what it would be like to be with Stephanie. And as much as she may have wanted to be Stephanie's girlfriend, the reality of that thought was beginning to blur. Stephanie's honesty pierced her heart and she knew she only had herself to blame. She was living in a daydream having wonderful expectations of a happy ending, rather than looking at the situation for what it really was.
"No I understand. I get that falling for someone takes time and patience." Nadia forced the words out without a hint of ache in her voice. "I just hope if you do find someone who makes you happy that you give whoever that person is a chance."
Nadia stared as Stephanie kept her focus on the ocean not once turning to face her. For the first time, she felt uncertain, doubtful, and scared. Deep down she had hoped that she was making some sort of emotional progress with Stephanie, but it was becoming clear that Stephanie still had walls up that Nadia hadn't brought down or even came close to.
"We'd better head back, the girls are probably home." As Stephanie stood up, she rolled up the beach towel and not once made eye contact with Nadia.
Nadia felt a cold chill and began questioning whether or not Stephanie still liked her. "Fuck! I should have just kept my mouth shut. I hope she doesn't hate me now. Shit Nadia why did you have to bring up Maxine?" Nadia thought to herself as she walked along side Stephanie back to the beach house.
As they entered the kitchen, they were immediately greeted from Becky and Tonya.
"Look what we got!" screamed Tonya.
Becky bought a pair of dark tight denim jeans while Tonya flaunted her purple band aid dress. "We're gonna look sexy tonight," smiled Tonya.
"Damn girl, that's a tight ass skimpy dress. I see you're looking to bring someone back home with that," laughed Stephanie.
Just then, Sandra and Courtney walked through the door carrying bags of take out from a Thai Restaurant.
"What happened to a light meal?" Becky asked with sarcasm.
"I know! Shut up! I was craving it and the food is actually really delicious," Courtney laughed.
"Ha ha I'm just teasing you Court! Gees relax! Besides you know I love Thai food."
The women sat around the dining room table sharing the activities of their days while enjoying their meals, and although the conversation was light hearted and full of laughs Nadia sat quietly still in doubt as to whether or not she screwed her chances up with Stephanie.
About an hour and a half had passed and the women began dispersing to their rooms to get ready for the night's festivities.
Nadia followed Stephanie into their bedroom and sorted through her clothes for a dress to wear to the party as Stephanie jumped into the shower. Still unsure of whether or not Stephanie was upset with her, Nadia gently pushed the bathroom door open and called out to her lover.
"Yes baby," Stephanie called back.
In a quiet voice Nadia asked, "are you upset with me about that conversation we had on the beach?"
Hearing the uncertainty in her voice, Stephanie peered her head through the shower curtain and shot a smile at Nadia. "Come here little one. Get in the shower with me."
Stephanie watched as Nadia undressed and grabbed her hand to pull her in the shower with her. The hot water felt relaxing against their skins, but Nadia kept her head down not wanting Stephanie to see the uncertainty in her face.
"Baby look at me," as Stephanie gently lifted Nadia's chin to face her. "You don't need to worry, I'm not upset about anything ok. You are so cute."
Still not wanting to make eye contact, Nadia kept her glance to the wall. She started to feel her eyes burn as they began to tear up. "Okay," Nadia whispered.
"Hey look at me little one. What's wrong?"
Making eye contact with Nadia, she saw as the tears began to swell in her eyes. "Oh my goodness baby, why are you crying? I promise I'm not upset about anything ok," as she pulled Nadia in for a hug and kissed her forehead. "You are so sweet my baby girl, but there's no need for tears."
"I don't know why I'm crying. This is so stupid!" Nadia said frustrated. "I hate when people see me cry."
"I think it's sweet."
"I'm sorry Steph. I like you and I don't want you to be upset with me. I shouldn't have even brought up the subject."
"No it's okay baby really. Look you can't help how you feel, those are your emotions. I do like you and enjoy spending time with you okay. I just don't want you to have certain expectations about us. I mean, I have a hard time with this you know? Maxine was my first love and it killed me. I know I need to work on letting people in, but it's just going to be a process I have to work through. Do you understand?"
"Yes I understand," whispered Nadia.
"Come on, we're here on vacation at a beautiful beach house with great company. Just be here with me and let's just focus on enjoying each other's company. Can you do that for me little one?"
After a deep breath, "You're right!" as Nadia forced a smile. It wasn't exactly what she had wanted to hear, but she understood pushing the subject any further would push Stephanie away. If she wanted to be with her, she knew she was going to have to relax and be patient. "What's the rush anyway?" she thought to herself. "She's worth the wait."
Continuing to wash each other, Stephanie gave Nadia little pecks and nibbles on her neck to lighten the mood. Bringing out Nadia's playfulness again, the two lovers started giggling and tickling each other as they continued on with their shower.
Within the hour, all six women were in the dining room area flaunting their sexy new outfits and beautiful hairdos. Stephanie wore short black khaki shorts that not only exposed her long gorgeous legs, but the tightness of her shorts brought out the round firmness of her ass. She wore a fitted white halter top exposing her toned arms and back, black open toed high heels, and wore her hair up in a pony tail. Nadia decided to go for a more relaxed look. She wore short white jean shorts with a blue halter top held up with chain straps. She straightened her hair with the exception of a few curls at the tips, and topped off her outfit with simple beach sandals.
Doing a last minute outfit check amongst each other, all women felt sexy and ready to hit the party scene. But before leaving, Courtney and Tonya brought out a bottle of Jameson Whiskey and six ice filled glasses.
"We need to loosen up just a bit first ladies," Tonya laughed while Courtney filled the glasses.
"Cheers to the sexiest women I've ever met. I am honored to be in the presence of you wonderful group of ladies, and I am thankful that I can call you all my best of friends," smiled Sandra.
After downing a few glasses of whiskey, the women were finally ready to leave.
The party was full of yuppies, many of whom owned properties along the beach and used them as getaway houses. The owners of the house party Jennifer and Carl, introduced the women to a few neighbors who were gathered in the living room and were soon lead to the beach patio where a majority of people were mingling and dancing. Near the corner of the patio was a large table full of party snacks and numerous bottles of liquor and mix drinks. "Make yourselves at home ladies, and drink whatever your heart desires," smiled Jennifer before walking off to welcome more quests.
Nadia stood by Stephanie's side enjoying her margarita, watching as the patio became crowded with people as the night grew on. A majority of people already knew the group of women as they had been going to that beach house for years, but there were a few men and women who approached them to exchanged introductions. So far the night was going smoothly for Nadia as she spent most of her time listening to the humorous conversations taking place not only amongst her group of friends but with nearby strangers as well.
A couple hours into the night, the women decided to head inside to find a place to sit and mingle with newer faces. Before approaching the living room, a woman called out to Stephanie and approached the group. She was a tall blonde with blue eyes and wore a tight fitting black dress.
"Now I know you weren't going to just walk by and not give me a hug Stephanie," the woman smiled.
"Oh my god! Andy how are you?" as Stephanie leaned in to give her a hug.
"It's been a long time, how have you been Steph?"
"Busy as usual, but you know how it is with me," smiled Stephanie.
"I guess some things don't change," as Andy smiled and caressed Stephanie's arm. "You still look amazing as ever."
Nadia stood quietly to wait for introductions, but judging by the interaction between Andy and Stephanie, she was beginning to have a nervous feeling in her gut telling her to keep her eye on this tall blonde.
"Andy this is Nadia," introduced Stephanie. "I invited Nadia up to join the girls and I."
"Hi nice to meet you."
"Likewise. It's actually Andrea, but Steph has always called me Andy," as she shot Stephanie a big smile.
"So how do you two know each other?" asked Nadia.
"We met at one of the clubs I was scouting in years back."
"Yeah, Steph kept staring at me from the bar until she finally had some balls to buy me a drink," Andrea laughed.
"Excuse me! Your memory must be shot because I remember quite the opposite. It was you who couldn't keep your eyes off of me!"smiled Stephanie.
"Well, I thought you were gorgeous, and still do." Nadia watched as Andrea blast a devious smile over to Stephanie as she said those words.
"Well it was lovely running into you Andy."
"Likewise, and it was nice to meet you as well Nadia."
"You too," as Nadia tried desperately to hide the jealousy building inside of her. As Nadia and Stephanie walked off, Nadia tried to brush off the interaction she had just witnessed between her lover and old friend. But the image of Stephanie's obvious flirtation bothered her.
"So, you and Andy huh?" Nadia said with a curious smile hoping it would hide the true emotions she was feeling.
"Don't be jealous Nadia, Andy and I barely dated long enough to even consider each other girlfriends."
Nadia was surprised that Stephanie called her by her name rather than the usual "baby" or "little one." Not wanting to overreact, Nadia pretended like it didn't bother her and moved on with the conversation.
"So what happened between you two? I mean, why didn't it last?"
"Um..well we both had our own careers to think about and at the time being in a serious relationship was the last thing on our minds."
"So what about now?"
"What about now?"
"Do you still feel that way about relationships?"
"I already told you Nadia, being in a serious relationship with someone will take time for me."
"Okay okay I'm sorry I brought it up," interrupted Nadia. The frustration was obvious in Stephanie's voice, but Nadia felt her own annoyance take over and didn't care.
After a minute of silence, "Do you.. miss Andy? You just looked really happy to see her?"
Stephanie rolled her eyes in frustration and stopped walking to face Nadia. "Look Nadia, Andy is an old friend so yes it is nice seeing her again.." Nadia kept her gaze on the floor as Stephanie continued. "I'm sorry if you feel uncomfortable, but she's just a friend."
"Okay, sorry if I'm frustrating you."
Stephanie sighed, "Let's just forget about it and enjoy the party."
Nadia strained a smile and nodded.
"Come on, let's find the other girls."
The lovers finally met up with the other women for drinks, and while Nadia hadn't completely forgotten about Andrea, she did her best to give Stephanie her space. After multiple drinks, the friends were back to laughing and gossiping about how if it weren't for the free booze, the party would have been a total waste of time. Half of the people were drunk off of their asses to the point where it was just annoying having to interact with them, and the other half were a bunch of stuck up yuppies who didn't know how to let loose and have a good time if their lives depended on it.
"Can we please get out of here?" groaned Tonya. "I mean, unless you want to stay a little longer to see if the party livens up a bit," she said sarcastically.
"Hell no, let's get out of here!" Courtney shot back. "What do you girls think? Ready to go?"
"Yes please," Becky responded.
"Yeah I'm pretty over this party," Sandra continued.
"And what about you two lovebirds over there?" Courtney asked.
"Yeah I'm good to go too," Nadia responded still keeping her distance from Stephanie.
"Yeah sure," Stephanie said. "I'm just going to get myself one more drink and then we can head off."
"Do you want me to come with you?" whispered Nadia.
"No it's okay, I'll be right back." Stephanie gave Nadia a quick kiss on her cheek and headed back toward the patio.
The friends stayed in the living room and continued to talk until Tonya grumbled again, "What the hell is taking Stephanie so long? It's been like 20 minutes or something; it doesn't this long to get a drink!"
"I'm going to look for her," responded Nadia. Without waiting for any replies, she left the living room and slowly made her way to the back of the house skimming the surrounding rooms looking for Stephanie. She started to feel a knot in her stomach that something had happened, and the image of a flirtatious blond was still gnawing at her. She quickened her pace toward the patio area, and before she could open the sliding door she saw Stephanie and Andrea standing face to face at the far corner of the deck. She wanted to interrupt them, but her body froze as she saw Andrea move in closer to Stephanie. She watched as Andrea slowly caressed Stephanie's arms and hair.
"Hey Nadia, did you find Stephanie?" Sandra asked as she approached. Nadia remained silent as if she didn't hear her.
Curious, Sandra shifted her focus toward whatever Nadia's gaze was set on until Andrea and Stephanie came into view.
"Is that..?" Just as Sandra was about to continue, Andrea pulled Stephanie in for a long sensual kiss. Sandra and Nadia watched as Andrea wrapped her arms around Stephanie's waist pulling her in tighter.
Sandra stood shocked in silence. Stephanie was one of her best friends, but she couldn't defend her actions to Nadia. For one thing she didn't know what was going on between Stephanie and Andrea, and she was at a loss for words on what to say to Nadia to ease the reality of the situation.
Nadia lowered her gaze to the floor as she felt her eyes begin to swell with tears.
Sandra saw a tear fall from Nadia's cheek and placed her arm on Nadia's shoulder. She knew she was hurting, but she couldn't provide an explanation to ease her pain.
Nadia felt her heart drop. It was broken and at that moment she wished she was back at home with her own friends. She ignored Sandra's attempt to comfort her as she was still in disbelief as to what she saw. Feeling overwhelmed with different emotions, Nadia just froze in silence.
