Jamie sat quietly in her pearl white BMW her thin fingers gripped the steering wheel of her car as she turned down the narrow driveway, while she hadn't expected quite the reaction that she got from Cole she was happy nonetheless that her plan had concluded without a hitch. Despite her pride of having ended their relationship she couldn't help but feel the knowledge that he had every intention on marrying Melanie eating away at her. "Does he really love her that much?" Jamie thought, no he can't she told herself yet not truly believing it. Melanie was becoming more of a hindrance than Jamie deemed necessary, she knew Cole and if he loved her as much as she knew he did, he would do everything in his power to get her back. "Over my dead body," Jamie mumbled to herself before pulling to the side of the road. She reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a small device from inside. In the months that she sat idle Jamie had convinced Evan that they needed dirt on Melanie in the off chance that she wasn't gullible enough to believe her story. Jamie purchased the GPS tracker and paid Evan to install it inside Melanie's car, allowing them to know her location with the touch of a button. As far as Jamie could tell Melanie was a saint, she never led them anywhere worth bringing up. Having come to this conclusion Jamie had grew frustrated that she wasted money on the clunky device until now.

She switched it on and waited while it adjusted and found her location, a crooked smirk lined Jamie's lips as a small dot signified that Melanie wasn't more than fifteen minutes away. The decrepit and twisted wheels in Jamie's mind began to twist and turn as she pulled her car back onto the road, she knew with Melanie in the way there would be no room in Cole's life for her. "This is all that bitches fault, if she would have just kept her filthy hands off him none of this would be happening Cole is mine, he belongs to me I'll show that bitch."

******

"I will go down with this ship and I won't put my hands up and surrender. There will be no white flag above my door I'm in love and always will be"

Melanie drove like a bat out of hell through the tears that flooded her vision, she weaved past cars her body shaking from the anger and sadness that gripped the very center of her heart. Had she been blind this entire time, so engrossed in her love for Cole that she didn't see he was using her? Living out some twisted wretched fantasy of bedding the unknowing black girl.

This can't be real, he said he loved me, Melanie thought her heart trying more than her mind to find some shred of innocence in this cluster fuck of events. He lied you idiot, he got what he wanted out of you played you for the fool you are and now look at you. Heartbroken again. Her mind was cruel, calculating and unforgiving. Had she wanted so badly to be needed to be loved that she walked like a babe to the slaughter.

The melancholy tone of dido's voice sickened Melanie, she wanted silence to be alone in this car with her sorrow. She looked down to turn the radio off, her eyes rose back to the street only to be met with the blinding light of another cars headlights. She tried to turn slamming her foot on the break, she heard the tires as they screeched. As Melanie's screams filled the confined space, the sound of metal caressing metal filled her ears, the contents of her car seemed to dance in midair as it turned and flipped. There was a slam and pain, that awful pain then... darkness.

***********************

Jamie's eyes fluttered open, the sound of the continuous horn blare made the throbbing in her head intensify causing her to wince in pain. She lifted her head from the steering wheel and looked around. Further down the road she could see Melanie's overturned car tucked under a bent street light, she could hear voices and immediately became nervous, she had to get out of sight and as far away from the crash as possible. Jamie wasn't certain how damaged her car was but figure there was only one way to find out. She fumbled for a moment before turning the key in the ignition, surprise filled her body when she heard the engine give and start up. Without a second thought she pulled off down the road.

"Mmmm girl, what you cooking? It smells great," Raul asked sliding out of his jacket.

"Baked ziti," Kandice replied placing the oblong shaped dish into the oven. " You might as well kick up your feet and watch a little TV, it won't be done cooking for another twenty minutes," Kandice said grabbing two wine glasses and a bottle of blue Moscato from her wine fridge and making her way into the living room with her friend.

She poured them both a glass and passed the first glass to Raul, "Oh my God, look at that car!" Raul said landing the channel on the news.

(Police are currently on the scene of a terrible hit and run that has left one woman critically injured. Witnesses say a white car sped down the street hitting the victim's car head on sending it flipping over five times down the street. We were also told that the driver of the suspected hit and run car left the scene shortly after the collision with severe damage to their own vehicle. Right now we are told the victim is being rushed to shock trauma, if anyone has any information involving this accident please call the number listed below.)

The camera flashed images spanned over to the car, its frame twisted and bent into a tight position, shattered glass and rear view lights stained pieces scattered across the street.

Both Raul and Kandice looked at each other both of them feeling the same nagging feeling that something was wrong, the car looked familiar but with the damage it was hard to tell. "The license plate, show the license plate," Kandice whispered her eyes glued to the TV. As if hearing her pleas the reporter stepped to the left forcing the camera to move as well. Behind her she could read the plate (MG1). "Oh my God!" Kandice said aloud her glass falling from her hand and smashing to the floor.

Tears immediately filled her eyes as Raul stepped next to her and pulled her into a hug, "She's going to be alright," Raul said patting Kandice's back. Kandice knew Raul was only trying to help to make her feel better, but all the words that were just spoken, crash, shock trauma, said otherwise.

"We have to find out where she is, I don't understand how someone could just leave her there alone," Raul said.

"Alone? Wait, Melanie told me she was going to spend the weekend with Cole, where is he?"

"I don't know, but if he's not with Melanie that means he doesn't know what's going on, we have to find him and let him know," Raul chimed in. Kandice nodded, she didn't know Cole's number but knew she could get it by accessing the employee registry.

"I can contact him, but first we have to find Melanie," Kandice replied.

"You're right, we'll have to call a few hospitals to see if she's there." Raul didn't waste any time, in less than five minutes he had looked up the numbers to the three major hospitals in the city. The first he called refused to give him any information, boasting their strict HIPAA laws before hanging up. He called John Hopkins hoping he would have better luck "Hello I was contacted by a doctor saying my sister, Melanie Graham was in an accident but we were disconnected."

The woman on the line went quiet for a moment before responding "Yes. Melanie Graham was admitted about fifteen minutes ago, if you'd like I could inform the doctor you are on your way so that you can be taken directly to her."

"That would be great thank you," Raul said. He gave the woman his name and phone number before throwing on his jacket. Kandice entered the living room having already used her laptop to access the jobs site to get Cole's cell phone number. "I know where she is," Raul said.

"Good I'll call Cole on the way," Kandice said before grabbing her keys before hurrying out the door.

*********

Cole paced back and forth, his hand unconsciously raking through his tousled hair as he tried yet again to contact Melanie. Since the moment she left he had called her repeatedly with no luck. At first it would ring until it reached her voicemail, he would leave a message only to call again. Now it was going directly to voicemail. If she would just let me explain, Cole thought, pressing end on his cell phone for what had to be the millionth time. He knew this was his fault, he should have told Melanie about Jamie, he didn't know why he hadn't ... Then again that was a lie too, he knew why. He didn't want to have to explain all of this to Melanie, how he was stupid enough to believe a marriage with Jamie would work, how she manipulated and lied her way into his life and bed, and how instead of divorcing her, he paid her to stay away from him. He had been afraid that telling Melanie any of this was a one way ticket to her leaving him. "Much good that's done me now," Cole mumbled sitting on the sofa in his living room.

*Ring-Ring*

Cole immediately grabbed his phone, and looked at the number hoping he would see Melanie's name and the picture of her beautiful face, but instead saw only the words (UNKNOWN NUMBER).

"Hello," Cole said, his voice gruff and annoyed.

"Cole ... Its Kandice, I need you to listen to me. Melanie was in an accident, we just got to the hospital, we don't know how serious it is but we're waiting for the doctor and you need to get here now!"

By the time Kandice had said Melanie was in an accident, it didn't take Cole any time to grab his keys and run out the door. As soon as she said the name of the hospital, he tossed the phone in the passenger seat and sped off down the road. All Cole could think of was that this was all his fault, their breakup, her accident, all of it was his fault. He said a silent prayer to god that she was alright and that she would forgive him.

When Raul & Kandice arrived they were surprised to see Melanie's parents looking distraught and confused inside the hospital atrium. They immediately rushed to their sides, both groups happy to see one another despite the situation. "Mr. and Mrs. Graham, have you talked to anyone yet?" Kandice asked.

"No, one of the nurses said the doctor is on the way but we've been waiting for twenty minutes."

"This is ridiculous, we're standing here while Melanie is somewhere in this gigantic hospital alone,' Raul said frustrated. He walked over to a large desk that seated three security guards and spoke with them. After a few finger snaps and a simple hand on his hip he had them being taken to a family room with the doctor. Kandice thanked god for Raul, if anyone could get results in a stressful situation it was him.

"Are you the parents of Ms. Graham?" The doctor asked her clipboard clasped in her hands.

"Yes we are," Charles quickly replied.

"Well my name is Doctor Bhamra, we had to rush you're daughter to emergency surgery. Her injuries are typically viewed as fatal."

"Oh my God," Mrs. Graham gasped clutching her husband.

"We found that your daughter is suffering from abdominal aortic aneurysm, in short that means that an enlarged area in the major blood vessel that supplies blood to her body has ruptured and is bleeding, in part with that her right leg is broken, she has multiple bone fractures including her collarbone. She is still currently in surgery and so far we have been able to stop the bleeding however we will be keeping a close eye on it to ensure it heals properly. I will have her designated nurse escort you to her room. I didn't want to say anything because of the severity of her injuries but your daughter is very fortunate to be alive." Kandice sighed a breath of relief, while it broke her heart to hear that her friend was not only hurt but severely so, she was just happy to hear that she was alive.

They were shortly shown to the room where Melanie would be. Against the wall were two blue reclining chairs and various machines and equipment. Soon after Melanie was brought inside still heavily sedated from the medication she had been given. The woman lying in front of Kandice was an entirely different person from the vibrant woman she grew to love, it killed her to see Melanie wrapped in bandages and casts her face bruised and swollen, machines beeped and buzzed monitoring her heart beat and breathing. "Who could do something like this?" Kandice whispered softly.

She wasn't sure anyone had heard until she heard Mr. Graham speak, "I'll tell you who, someone with no care for human life. They hit my baby and left her they didn't even bother to call the police but drove away alive, I'm sure."

Mrs. Graham softly caressed Melanie's face pushing stray lengths of hair from her battered face. "My baby," she cried tears leaving trails on her honey colored skin. Charles put his hands on his wife's shoulders and squeezed lightly. From the right of the room they could hear shouting, and almost instantly Kandice recognized the voice.

"Is that Cole?" she asked making her way to the door, with Charles not far behind.

"I'm looking for Melanie Graham, I know she's here just let me see her," Cole said pain and fear etched his chiseled features as he stared down a blonde hair nurse with a pixie cut.

"Sir, if you're not family I cannot permit you to see the patient," she replied matter of factly.

"No, let him through that's my son," Charles said rebuffing the nurse's denial of entry. Cole looked up into Charles' face and smiled.

He moved quickly passed the nurse towards them shaking Charles' hand, "Thank you sir," Cole said.

"Don't mention it," Mr. Graham replied with a nod, "she's inside but still unconscious, are you sure you want to see her this way?" Charles asked his words warning Cole.

"Yes, of course I'm sure" Cole replied, Charles stepped aside letting Cole in. He made his way to her bed side and broke down, immediately falling to his knees he clutched her hand and kissed it.

The gleaming earth tone color he loved so much, was gone and as much as he hated to think it Melanie looked on the verge of death, her body cold and motionless. "My fault, this is all my fault," Cole said in between sobs.

"No son this isn't your fault, some lunatic was careless behind the wheel and hit Melanie, this was an accident."

Cole shook his head and stood to his full height, his head lowered in shame, " We got into an argument at my place, she was hurt and angry and she ran off. I could have stopped her but I didn't. I saw how upset she was and I did nothing," Cole said his hands clenched tightly in a fist.

"A fight about what?" Charles asked his eyebrow raised.

"Melanie found out some things about my past, she didn't give me the opportunity to explain and I ..."

"Things, what things? Cole you're not making much sense." Mrs.Graham said.

As Cole began to respond, the room filled with the sounds of groans. In an instant all eyes were on Melanie as her eyes fluttered open.

Charles immediately rushed to her side "Hey baby girl, Daddy's here." Melanie tried to moved her body but was quickly stopped, "No, no sweetheart don't try to move just relax, you're in the hospital. You were in an accident." Melanie took a moment, to take in her surroundings. She pointed to a cup sitting on a small table next to her and waited as her father grabbed the cup and brought the straw to her lips for her to drink. The feeling of the cool liquid flowing down her burning throat eased the ache she was feeling as she smiled, around her she saw her mother and her friends but the smile instantly dissipated when she saw Cole.

"What's he doing here," she said to her father her voice raspy and harsh.

Charles looked back at Cole, whose head still hung under Melanie's stern gaze, "He came to see you sweetheart. You didn't think you would get hurt and he wouldn't want to be with you?"

"Well I don't see why that should matter. Don't you think you should be home with your wife?" Melanie said, her words like venom as they landed on Cole's ears.

"WIFE!" Melanie's mother yelled standing from the chair she had once occupied.

"Cole what wife, what is she talking about?" Charles asked. Cole couldn't help but feel the need to run out of the room, the feeling was abnormal for him, having always been a man who commanded a room and gave others this feeling himself. He now understood why, having eyes glaring at you waiting for an explanation. One he knew was equally necessary and deserved, and seeing now that this may be his only chance to state his case he spoke.

"I was married to a woman name Jamie Kincaid, we grew up in the same social class and I thought in the beginning that she was right for me. It wasn't long after we got married that I realized that I made a terrible mistake, she refused to give me a divorce so I paid her to stay away from me from then on we had moments where we were on again off again but when I met Melanie I tried to break it off..."

"You should have tried harder," Melanie said through pressed lips. Raul and Kandice stood in the corner of the room there eyes wide as they watched the events unfold in front of them like a broadcasted soap opera.

"Melanie I know that you're upset, I know you're hurt but those things she told you, those pictures were lies none of that happened I was never with her when I was with you. You have to believe that."

"I don't believe that Cole, but what I do believe is my eyes and I know what I saw. You had every opportunity to tell me the truth to let me know what was going on even if it was from you're past and you just kept me in the dark. I don't want another person in my life that would sooner lie to me then run the risk of looking less than who they are in my eyes. Daddy I want him to go," Melanie said before closing her eyes again.

"Melanie I ..."

Cole began but was stopped by Charles "Cole I think its best you leave." Cole knew he had no grounds to force his hand and stay, and he knew Melanie wouldn't say another word to him. With a nod, he turned on his heels and left the room defeated.

***ACROSS TOWN***

Evan sat quietly his eyes glued to the TV as they flashed images of a car crash on the television. From behind he could hear the sound of knocking. He got up from the sofa and quickly opened the door only to be met by a battered frame. "Jamie?" he said looking over her appearance, he stepped aside letting her enter. As she limped, her right hand clasping at her side bruises scattered about her body from her arms to her legs. "What the fuck happened to you?" evan yelled slamming the door.

"Nothing ... Nothing" Jamie stammered easing her body onto the sofa.

"Nothing my ass, Jamie you're bleeding," he said motioning to the cut above her eye.

"I had an accident that's all, nothing some rest and a bit of alcohol won't fix. Now make me a drink," she spit out groaning at the sharp pain that shot through her.

"Accident?" Evan said not loud enough for Jamie to hear, his eyes went back to the TV the words Hit and Run in bold letters covered the lower screen. "Jamie, tell me you didn't have anything to do with that." Evan said pointing towards the flat screen TV.

"And if I did?" Jamie said slyly her eyes narrowing into thin slits as she peered at evan.

"You walk in my house looking like you've been trampled by a herd of bulls, there's a hit and run crash being investigated right now, so excuse the fuck out of me while I put two and two together and say this is you're doing."
