NOTE: The tree in chapter-1 exploded because of the Djinns missed attack.

*

Next morning dawned just like it usually did in the small town of Ravenville, Virginia, USA.Sunny and bright. A bright patch of sunlight found its way through the window of Michael's room illuminating his face. It only made him turn over in a lazy motion so that the light warmed his back and fell on his birthmark. It looked like a large, slightly indistinct tattoo of a raven wings spread apart, about to pounce. It spread from shoulder blade to shoulder blade.

Michael was distinctly average looking for a teen. He had a face which was very easily lost in a crowd. He had black hair and eyes. That coupled with his ordinary features meant that he probably wouldn't stand out at all in a crowd, based on his face. He had an athlete's physique from years of practicing martial arts such as Kendo and Aikido. Still his muscles were usually hidden by his baggy style of clothing.

At that time, Michael was having a very happy dream about being the guest of honour at a buffet. The dream was shattered by his mother's voice, yelling for him from downstairs. He rolled himself off his bed and shuffled down to the kitchen. It took him a moment to get his bearings. Both his parents were dressed in business suits. Their small carryons were resting on the kitchen table; there were two suitcases on the floor. Both of them were bustling about trying to get things done and generally getting in each other's way.

".......and remember to call Betty to come over once in a while!"said Carla, finally taking a breath.

"He is an adult dear; he can take care of himself. But i will call her, just to make you feel better" replied Robert.

Robert and Carla Desade, 44 and 46 respectively were the parents of 24 year old Julia Desade and 18 year old Michael Craven Desade. The middle name Craven was supposedly the name of one of his ancestors. Carla was reasonably fit for her age with kind brown eyes and a trim figure. She could still run a mile in 15 minutes flat. Robert still had the body and scars of his former life as a marine scout sniper. He was also Michael's first combat teacher and sparring partner. He could still kick ass and take names with the best of them according to Michael. Robert and Carla were both partners in the same multinational corporation. Right now both of them were about to leave for an overseas business trip. Julia was an engineering student at MIT.

"You are going to be on your own for a long time. Will you be all right?"Asked Carla

"I will be fine mom, now go or the flight will leave without." replied Michael.

Robert placed a hand on his wife's shoulder and firmly started to steer her out the door pulling a suitcase on wheels with his other hand.

"He can take care of himself dear, now let's go."

Carla still managed to turn around and peck Michael on the cheek, as she left.

Michael heaved a sigh as the front door slammed shut. The peace and quiet of the house suited him well. He had just gotten up to go back upstairs to sleep when he received the first shock of the morning.

"Very careless, young one. Had I been an assassin, you would have been dead.....several times over."

The words came from the mouth of a woman. She had an ageless quality about her which made it hard to discern her age. Her hair was pure white while her eyes were cherry red with black slitted pupils. She was dressed in some sort of slinky purple evening dress which left her left shoulder bare. That coupled with her rather sizable cleavage made it rather hard for him to look away from her. But to Michaels trained eyes she also appeared to be a fighter. It made him settle instinctively into a neutral combat stance (Feet slightly spread apart, Muscles relaxed.)

"You can relax young one, if I wanted you dead; I could have done so last night."

Michael started to speak, but was cut off before he could begin.

"As things stood, I almost did kill you last night. But your little scuffle with the Djinn has impressed me."

Michael opened his mouth but was cut off. "I have decided to let you live for now. And this is yours by the way."

The woman tossed something long and thin at Michael who caught it out of reflex. When he looked up again, he was suddenly pinned between the woman and the table. "I can already smell your power." She kissed him thoroughly leaving him breathless and disappeared taking a step back. He took a closer look at the long thin something only to see that it was a katana. The hilt was engraved with etched skulls and other unrecognisable things. The joint between the hilt and the blade was shaped like a raven's head, with the sword blade protruding from its open beaks. When he drew the blade, he saw that it was black just like the sheath. There was something written on one flat side of the blade in a strange script. The meaning of the words suddenly appeared in his mind and said it out loud.

"May the dammed serve for eternity"

As soon as he said the words out loud Michael was suddenly aware that he had spoken in a language unknown to him. The words unlocked something in him that had always been there unnoticed. A rush of cold power spread outward in a ring with him at its centre. The power reminded him of a graveyard at night. It left him gasping for breath like a fish out of water. His vision and other senses suddenly sharpened. The ring of power faded away but left him with an awareness of something (he had no idea what.)Michael sheathed the sword and then drew it again with a speed born of skill and practice. An old man had just appeared out of thin air, at the same place where the white haired woman had first appeared. He looked just like an old Chinese man.Tiny, bald, heavily wrinkled face and wearing a bowler hat. He was dressed in an oversized gi. His Voice was unlike what Michael had expected-sonorous and clear.

"Greetings young master. My master the Caliph of the North apologises for the misconduct of the warrior Eriyenes. He says that the Djinn nation is willing to make any reparations you might wish for in recompense."

Having said his peace the Chinese man disappeared.

Michael sheathed the katana and sat back down on the chair. He almost put his head down on the table when there was a flicker of movement just outside the kitchen window. The glass shattered and a transparent sphere filled with swirling black mist came rolling in. The sphere shattered and all hell broke loose.

Certainly not a bad start, but really the chapters need to be longer so we can get a bit on continuity as we read......
