The Slang of Prostitution (Part 01)
In an effort to create more realistic and vital dialogue in fiction a writer has many tools and devices at his or her disposal. Slang can add color, humor and a distinct realism to dialogue. It can also aid with character development and background.
Prostitution has been around throughout history and as it evolved, a unique and colorful language has emerged. Some of this language has filtered down to the customers. In any work of fiction or non-fiction relating to prostitution the use of the industry related slang in dialogue and description can add dimension to the work.
A complete listing of every bit of slang used in prostitution could probably fill its own dictionary, so I will try to highlight a few of the more interesting terms, along with a brief description, history or usage guide. Some of this slang reflects the age and or location it was used in, so make sure the slang is appropriate for your story. Again, while this listing is by no means comprehensive, any story relating to prostitution can be enhanced by the proper usage of some of these terms.
alley cat - A nonprofessional. Usage: Damn alley cat keeps taking my customers. Translation: That damn non-professional keeps taking my customers.
aspro - A male professional prostitute, pronounced “ass pro.” Usage: The guy at the bar is an aspro. Translation: The guy at the bar is a male prostitute.
bar girl or b-girl - Term used in Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s referring to the waitresses who also acted as prostitutes. Usage: This bar has the best b-girls in the city. Translation: This bar has the best waitresses who will have sex for money.
bottom woman - The pimp’s favorite prostitute. Usage: Yeah, she’s got it good being his bottom woman. Translation: She has it good being the pimp’s favorite.
charity girl - A prostitute who often will have sex with a man and not charge him. Usage: That charity girl just doesn’t get it. Translation: She just doesn’t get it, not charging for it.
double - The number two girl for a pimp. Usage: How you like being his double? Translation: How do you like being the pimp’s second favorite.
fishmonger - Prostitute on her own, working out of an apartment. Also called a erring sister, fish or a flat floozy.
Ginger - A prostitute who will rob a customer if she gets a chance. Usage: Damn bitch was a Ginger. Translation: The damn prostitute robbed me.
gook - Lowest form of prostitute. A term unrelated to the offensive term applied to Asians, particularly the Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. Usage: You better stay away from that gook. Translation: You better stay away from that low life prostitute.
messer - Amateur prostitute who takes business from the professionals. Usage: Damn, with that messer around here, I can’t get any action. Translation: Damn, with that amateur here, I can’t make any money.
mouth whore - Prostitute who prefers giving oral sex. Usage: The one on the corner is a mouth whore if you’re interested. Translation: That prostitute on the corner prefers giving oral sex if that’s what you want.
rock whore - Woman who will trade sex for crack. Usage: The only hookers here are rock whores. Translation: The only prostitutes here trade sex for crack cocaine.
sitter - A housewife who works part-time as a prostitute during the day. Usage: She’s a sitter, so she only works during the day. Translation: She works part-time so she’s only available in the day before she goes home to her family.
stock - Young prostitute working in a brothel. Usage: Hire her, she will be good stock for us. Translation: Hire her, she’s young and will make a nice prostitute for the brothel.
three-way girl - A prostitute who will engage in oral, vaginal or anal sex. Usage: Hey if you want a real party get a three-way girl. Translation: If you want a real good time get a prostitute who will perform oral, vaginal and anal sex.
zook - A tired-out and old professional. Usage: I’d avoid that one, she is a real zook. Translation: I’d avoid that one, she is just too old and tired out.
The use of some of the terms above will add definitely add color and dimension to most any story. These are just a few of the colorful terms frequently used in prostitution.
