Preface

Colonel Jack O'Neill team leader of SG1 comprising, Captain Samantha Carter a tall blonde beauty, Daniel Jackson, a scientist and expert in ancient languages and cultures and Teal'c a burley alien freedom fighter, are walking down a corridor towards an area known as the gate room, which is on one of the many underground levels housed inside Cheyenne Mountain a secret USAir Force complex. Captain Carter is talking,

"The malp readings indicate low UV levels all other indications suggest positive environment."

Jack interjects,

"Sounds good!"

They enter the gate room and stand before the Stargate, a huge round alien metal artefact comprising of an outer and inner ring, around the outer ring are a number of symbols resembling Chevron's, as they watch a number of the Chevron's start to illuminate, opening and closing as they begin to activate, the inner ring starts to rotate.

The team are watching the process intently when suddenly Chevron seven fails to operate puzzled Colonel O'Neill turns to look up at the control room situated behind him. A puzzled technician engages the intercom system,

"Chevron seven will not engage!"

Captain Carter leaves the gate room and makes her way up to the control room, as she enters the control room the technician calls out,

"I don't understand it the diagnostic shows no problems."

Sam and the technician look at the monitors before them, which are showing no errors whatsoever. Sam activates the intercom between the control room and gate room,

"Sir it's going to take a while..."

Reluctantly the team leave the gate room and make their way up to the control room, General Hammond the Commander of the Stargate facility joins them as Sam talks through the result of her findings,

"It looks like there was an energy spike in our power log about eight minutes before we first tried to dial out."

Daniel Jackson interjects,

"Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that something we've seen before when another gate is being used on earth."

Jack answers,

"Like when Mayborne N.I.D. guys had the other gate."

Teal'c points out,

"There is no longer a second Stargate on earth."

General Hammond explains,

"Ours was destroyed along with Thor's ship."

Sam continues the hypothesis,

"But if it was another gate and its use was responsible for the energy spike, there might be a corresponding seismic tremor; like when the gate was found in Antarctica..."

The technician interrupts as a monitor in front of him is showing seismic activity somewhere within the Siberian area of Russia,

"I've got something!"

Sam and Jack move over to the technician and look over his shoulder at the monitor, Sam points to the monitor,

" There was a minor seismic event that matches the time in our power log exactly."

Exasperated Jack asks,

"Is that Siberia?"

Nodding Sam replies,

"Yes sir, there's only one explanation I can think of..."

Daniel finishes Sam's sentence for her,

"The Russians have a Stargate!"

Chapter one

A short time later Colonel O'Neill, Capt Carter, Daniel Jackson, and Teal'c are seated around the conference table in the briefing room. As General Hammond walks into the room he advises them,

"The Russians recovered the Stargate from the bottom of the ocean."

Jack inquires,

"I thought we swept that entire area?"

Hammond replies,

"We're talking about hundreds of square miles Colonel; the Russian navy was on alert because they picked up Thor's ship on their radar they must have got lucky and beaten us to it."

Surprised Sam asks,

"And they're admitting it?"

Hammond replies,

"We didn't give them much choice Captain; the Pentagon said we have the evidence that could prove it."

Daniel interjected,

"Obviously they had figured out how it works."

Sam observed,

"It took us years!"

Hammond continued,

"Apparently the Russians know quite a bit about the SGC."

O'Neill queried,

"How?"

"They didn't say... How they got it open isn't the issue right now either, right now the problem is it won't close."

Daniel inquired,

"Well that doesn't make any sense, I mean shouldn't it eventually shut down on its own?"

Teal'c informs the group,

"The Goa' uld had not been able to sustain a wormhole for longer than thirty eight minutes."

Jack asks,

"What about another black hole planet..."

Sam intervenes,

"We would detect the gravitational anomalies sir."

Hammond continues,

"The Russian government is divided on how to deal with the situation, seems the Russian President didn't support setting up a Stargate program in the first place. Until we called, they were planning on bombing the facility and covering the whole thing up."

Jack inquires,

"And now?"

"One of the Russian scientists involved in starting the program convinced them to send in a team to assess the situation and determine if it can be resolved in another way."

Sam inquired,

"Who's the scientist?"

"Dr Svetlana Markoff."

" Wow, I know her work she's brilliant."

Exclaimed Sam.

Hammond continued,

"She knows about you too Captain to that end she's convinced Moscow to let SG 1 be the team that goes to Siberia."

Shocked Jack looked directly at Hammond and inquired,

"You're kidding!"

"Jack I'm thankful they're smart enough to realise this has global implications and that you are the foremost experts on the Stargate."

Exasperated Jack inquires,

"General we would be walking into an unknown situation to save their rosy butts."

Daniel advises the group,

"We can't use our gate until we get theirs shut down."

Sam continues with a the thread,

"Not to mention the potential danger of having an open wormhole between Earth and who knows where!"

Hammond issues the following order,

" You will rendezvous with Dr Markoff in Russia and proceed to the base from there."

The look on Jack's face said it all he, was not happy.

Chapter two

A US Air Force Hercules C130 military transport was standing on a Russian airfield American maintenance crew and loading technicians were carrying out various tasks in and around the aircraft. Russian armed guards were also patrolling the area. Colonel O'Neill and Captain Carter were standing near an open hatch watching a Russian military vehicle draw to a stop nearby. Dr Svetlana Markoff alights from the vehicle and approaches them both. She is inches shorter than Sam and very attractive, dark brown hair and full figure she like the rest of them is dressed in warm winter clothes. Jack inquires,

"Dr Markoff I presume?"

"Sorry I'm late."

She shakes hands as Sam states,

"Doctor it's an honour I've read your work."

"And I yours Captain Carter and I hoped we would meet under different circumstances."

As Jack extends his hand,

"Jack O'Neill."

As Daniel and Teal'c approached the group Svetlana continues,

"Yes; and Dr Daniel Jackson and Teal'c."

Sam asks,

"How'd you know about the SGC?"

"I have read extensive files on all of you."

Jack inquired,

"The question was how?"

"I learnt to read English at the age of six, it's not difficult."

O'Neill and Carter looked at one another smiling,

"Russian humour."

Sam laughed.

Dr Markoff continued,

"I will tell you what I can on the way."

Once the team was aboard the aircraft and clearance was given, it started off down the runway finally getting into the air. The C130 Hercules interior was quite spacious even with all their equipment stowed on board. Seating arrangements were very basic, virtual planks fastened to the fuselage walls. Seated on one side of the interior Jack and Daniel and on the other side Svetlana all were wearing heavy winter coats and helmets, which enabled them to communicate with each other above the noise of the engines. Sam walked from the rear of the plane and sat down beside Svetlana who was talking about the Russian Stargate,

"After the Russian radar picked up what we believed to be an alien spaceship entering the atmosphere..."

Surprised Jack retorted,

"Alien spaceship!"

Svetlana continued,

"About two months ago; it disintegrated during re-entry and crashed in the Pacific. The Stargate was recovered after an extensive search of the ocean floor, during that search one of the foxtrot submarines went missing. You may be familiar with the incident?"

Jack replied tersely,

"Not a clue!"

Bemused Svetlana continued,

"I was assigned to the programme as chief science officer second-in-command to Colonel Sokolov; we'd been in operation for thirty seven days albeit against the wishes of certain very powerful people in the government."

Sam asked,

"What did they want to do?"

After some thought Svetlana replied,

"They threatened to expose the existence of your program."

Jack asked,

"To what end?"

"To get the US to share the technology you have attained."

Jack looked at her quizzically as Sam asked,

"So what stopped them?"

"We activated our gate; then convinced the military we could benefit from our own programme more than we could trust you."

Daniel asked,

"How did you activate it?"

"We have a dialling device."

Stunned Daniel asked,

" A DHD: you found the one from Giza?"

Before Svetlana would reply Teal'c had joined them and sat down beside Daniel. Svetlana continued,

"It was confiscated from the Germans after the Second World War."

Sam commented,

"Now I can understand how you can send you people through and get them to return to your gate instead of ours."

Nonplussed Jack retorted,

"That makes one of us."

Bemused Svetlana continued,

"Our gate superseded yours as long as the dialling device was connected; we only kept it connected when we were using it to prevent any crossover: it required precise timing but it worked."

Coldly Jack replied,

"Until now!"

"As for the current situation, I really don't know what has happened; there has been no contact with the base since yesterday at 1200 hrs."

At this point a crew member came from the rear of the plane and said to them,

"Sir, we have a visual of the target runway, it appears to be iced over and there is no response from the control tower."

Svetlana informed them,

"We're going to have to jump!"

Shocked Daniel looked at the others,

"Out of the plane!"

Teal'c and Sam looked equally shocked. After several minutes silence Svetlana said,

"I'm going with or without you Colonel."

Jack replied,

"I suppose you expect my male bravado to kick in right about now."

"I've read your file."

"No mention of male bravado."

"There are forty seven people down the who may need our help."

Leaning forward and looking straight into Svetlana's face Jack retorted,

"Look: you don't have to tell me what's at stake here: we've got seven teams off world we can't get home until we fix what you screwed up."

Rebuked, Svetlana leant back against the fuselage and looked nobody in particular. As Jack began to rise from his seat he was talking into the microphone of his headset,

"Sergeant, gear them up: were at jump."

Resignedly the team stood and made their way to the rear of the aircraft where they donned their parachutes. Teal'c looked quizzically at Jack,

"I don't understand O'Neill!"

"It's called a parachute."

"It slows your dissent after you jump out of the plane."

Sam informed Teal'c, to which Teal'c replied,

"This device seems poorly designed to provide such a function."

Jack retorted,

"It opens after you jump."

Teal'c looked back at him bemused,

"Don't worry about it I've done it hundreds of times."

Svetlana inquired,

"I suppose you've brought Haz-Mat?"

"Yes, I thought somebody should be prepared."

Exasperated Svetlana looked at Sam and inquired,

"Is he always like this?"

"Actually, this is quite charming."

Resignedly Svetlana moved to the rear of the plane with the others and stood watching while the great rear cargo doors slowly swung open revealing the immense drop which lay before them. The cargo handlers manoeuvred a huge crate to the rear of the exit ramp and pushed it out, over the intercom the sergeant called out,

"Cargo gone Sir!"

Next on the exit ramp where O'Neill and Teal'c Jack was telling Teal'c,

"It's easy just jump and pull this."

In saying that Jack pointed to Teal'c's ripcord, which was situated on his harness. Teal'c replied,

"It does not seem wise O'Neill."

"I said it was easy; not wise!"

Svetlana said to them all,

"If we all get separated we will rendezvous at the base."

Having said that she moved to the edge of the ramp and jumped. Next ago was Sam she launched herself from the ramp like a pro, without hesitation. O'Neill manoeuvred Teal'c to the edge of the ramp turning Teal'c said to O'Neill,

"This does not seem wise!"

With Jack's help Teal'c launched himself into space. Next ago was Daniel who, with a little help from Jack launched himself off the edge of the ramp last to go was Colonel O'Neill. The sergeant and his jump crew watched as their chutes opened and they slowly descended to the ground the ramp closed and the plane flew off into the distance.

Chapter three

Colonel O'Neill, Captain Carter and Dr Markov were trudging through a mountainous region surrounded by tall snow-covered conifers the ground through which they trudged was covered with deep freshly fallen snow. Eventually they came into a large clearing in the centre of which stood numerous buildings dwarfed by a huge steel grey concrete coloured building. Situated on top of the building were numerous radio antennas and satellite dishes situated in one of the walls was a set of huge rusty iron gates. As they approach the gates Carter was talking into the microphone of his headset,

"Teal'c, Daniel..."

After receiving no response from Teal'c or Daniel O'Neill advised the others,

"There's been no response on the radio's."

Svetlana replied,

"Their signals may be blocked if they are already inside."

On reaching the gates O'Neill managed to open one of them and the three quickly moved inside, the place was in complete darkness, all were wearing B.C.F. suits and respirators and weapons at the ready. Svetlana was the last in and she closed the gate behind her turning the others she said,

"Up there."

O'Neill spoke in to his headset once again,

"Teal'c, Daniel do you read..."

A response was almost instantaneous as they received a message from Teal'c through their headsets,

"I am here."

"Where?"

"In the facility!"

Teal'c responded,

"Yeah I'm here too."

Chipped in Daniel.

"Where?"

"Well; I don't know exactly; where are you?"

"Searching!"

O'Neill, Carter, and Markoff were slowly working their way through the complex, Carter was analysing the atmosphere with some of the instrumentation she was carrying,

"I'm picking up trace amounts of chlorine, nothing dangerous at these levels though."

Eventually the trio came into a huge elongated chamber, startled O'Neill inquired,

"Right, what is this place?"

Carter interjected,

"It obviously wasn't built specifically for the Stargate project."

Svetlana advised them,

"It was an experimental power station..."

Sam queried,

"Experimental?"

Svetlana continued,

"All I'm allowed to tell you is that it was decommissioned two years ago."

O'Neill in disgust,

" Oh really!"

As they moved deeper into the area Sam inquired,

" Are there lights?"

"The power seems to have been diverted from all non essential base functions, this way to the main control centre."

Carefully the three of them edged forward, as they rounded a corner O'Neill stopped them as he'd seen movement in the distance, the microphone clicked,

"Daniel, is that you?"

"I don't know I'm walking down the long corridor."

"Which one?"

As the shadowy figure approached O'Neill his weapon raised, suddenly a beam of high-intensity light shone from a light source fixed to his weapon fully illuminating Daniel.

"This one!"

Svetlana then moved to the front calling to the others,

"This way."

And she reached Daniel he said,

"Actually you may want to see this first."

Daniel led them deeper into the corridor where they eventually met with Teal'c who was kneeling over a prone figure dressed in a white lab coat, as the group reached him he slowly turned the body over revealing a gunshot wound in his chest. Standing Teal'c indicated to other bodies lying strewn around the floor.

"These three were shot; I am unaware however how the others died."

After looking at the bodies for several seconds Svetlana indicated for the others to follow her,

"These doors lead to the Stargate."

Upon reaching the doors Svetlana stood before a control panel, reaching up to the panel she keyed in a code, then inserting an ID tag into an appropriate slot they all heard the boats in the door sliding back, Svetlana opened the door and walked in an horrific sight met her eyes within the gate room. The gate was active and open strewn around the room on the floor were numerous bodies, all obviously dead. The room was lit with an iridescent shimmering light emanating from the open gate. The others followed her in looking around them at the devastating scenes of carnage; shell cases littered the floor giving some indication as to how some of these persons had died.

Following Svetlana they all made their way deeper into the control room more corpses were found seated at the consoles. Moving over to the one of the consoles Svetlana began to flick numerous switches, slowly more consoles began to come to life, a number of lights around the area came on, the monitor in front of Svetlana began to display various readings. After a moment Svetlana took off her respirator and placed it on the floor beside her. The others saw that she was obviously distressed and tears were running down her cheeks as she advised them,

"It's safe."

Teal'c was the first one to take off his respirator,

" The air is indeed safe!"

The others cautiously took off their respirators and placed them on the floor, Sam seeing how distressed Svetlana was she moved over to her and placed her arms gently around her neck and shoulders,

" You okay?"

Now crying openly Svetlana sobbed out,

"I knew these men and women Captain: some of them, quite well."

O'Neill inquired of Svetlana,

"So what happened here?"

" Colonel Sokolov enacted the extreme measures protocol."

Daniel inquired,

"What's that?"

"The Stargate room is sealed and substance thirty-five is released throughout the base."

Shocked Sam inquired,

"Nerve gas!"

O'Neal exploded,

"Nerve gas!"

"It's okay Colonel: it's a non-persistent gas, it evaporates after three hours. According to the base computer the protocol was activated yesterday."

Teal'c inquired,

"For what reason?"

"The computer log doesn't say."

O'Neill interjected,

"Okay people were shooting themselves around here before they got gassed, I want to know why."

At this point they all started to take off their weapons harnesses, B. C. F suits and their cold weather smocks.

"We'll see what we can find out."

Returned Daniel. Svetlana rose from the seat in front of her console and reached up to a shelf taking hold of a clipboard turning to the others she pointed to the list of names typed on paper fixed on the clipboard,
