Chapter Four: In The Rain

Mouse lounged on her bed with a romance novel, a cup of hot cocoa, a bag of Hershey kisses, and her cat, Pound Cake (or just Cake for short) draped over her feet and purring. Cake was a swirl of orange and black, which had earned her her name; one of Mouse's favorite treats was marble pound cake. Cake had come into the household when she was just a kitten, and now she was three years old, a full grown (and very big) Maine coon cat. Mouse was thought of as a hard ass by the few who knew her well, but she was a sap for her cat.

"Can you believe this stuff, Cake?" Mouse asked, holding out fingers smeared with chocolate for the cat to lick. "I mean, come on. Candice is this tough, independent woman and then she meets this Nathaniel and turns into a total ninny. All because he's good looking and kisses well."

Cake just blinked at her, wearing the usual somewhat disdainful expression that cats did so very well. An expression that said quite clearly "I think you're the ninny."

"Oh, what do you know?" Mouse sighed. "You're spayed anyway."

It wasn't often that Mouse spent a lot of time reading romance novels, but she was somewhat curious. Her mother had had the "talk" with her a long time ago, and she knew basic anatomy, but beyond that her understanding and knowledge was rather threadbare. Some of the things she read in the book caught her off guard. Do people really do that? Mouse wondered. I mean...that's...well...it sounds kinda gross. She sighed and set the book down. Boy, she was pathetic.

It wasn't like she hadn't had any opportunities to find out more. Books, movies, magazines, you name it. She'd never been interested. Mouse supposed she might know more if she listened to people talking, but the only person she ever talked to much was Kara. Kara didn't seemed to realize Mouse's lack of knowledge, and anyway, she preferred to talk about gossip and rumors.

The phone rang suddenly and Mouse winced at the shrill tone. She was the only one at home, something that was usually the case. Throwing down the book, she nudged Cake off her feet and raced into the living room to grab the phone. She got her hands on it just before the answering machine picked up and hit the talk button.

"Hello?" Mouse asked breathlessly.

There was a slight pause, then, "Mouse, is that you? This is Rainer..."

"Uh, yeah," Mouse answered. "What's up?"

"I was wondering what you're doing," Rainer said. "I know it's last minute, but I'm having a small party over here and I thought you might like to come."

"How big is small?" Mouse asked warily.

Rainer laughed. "Only a few of us. It's a lousy day, looks like rain, so we're stuck in doors."

"You know these aren't my type of people," Mouse hedged.

"Well, I won't take no for an answer," Rainer told her. "And I'm stubborn. I'll go over there and kidnap you if I have to."

Mouse grinned despite herself. She was really starting to enjoy Rainer's company. However she hadn't actually spent any time with his friends. The thought made her rather nervous. The only person she ever spent time with was Kara, who was as much of an outcast as she was. Rainer was good looking and popular, and he had a lot of popular, good looking friends. Mouse sighed. She wasn't going to get out of this.

"All right, I guess I'll come," She conceded.

"Good," Rainer said. "Get your butt in gear and get over here. I expect you in no more than half an hour."

He hung up without waiting for an answer. Arrogant little... Mouse thought, but she was smiling. Okay, you brat, you win. She hung up the phone and padded back into her room. Cake was sitting on the bed, lapping up hot cocoa from the mug Mouse had left on the dresser. She shooed the cat away and dumped out the cocoa before getting dressed.

Rainer watched his friends, but his mind was elsewhere. The clacking of pool balls breaking apart and the chatter of the girls sitting at the wet bar on the other side of the room couldn't penetrate his thoughts. Twenty five minutes had passed; Mouse should be here soon. He was nervous about introducing her to his friends; they were part of the "in" crowd, after all, and Mouse was very much an outcast. But I want her here, Rainer thought, sighing deeply. She's my friend too.

The doorbell rang, finally, although it was difficult to hear in the pool room. With his parents away and the day staff gone for the night, the house felt even bigger than it was (which was huge). Rainer waved to his friends, signaling for them to stay put, and trotted down the hall and through the large living room to the front door. Mouse had only been to his home a handful of times and he had been a bit worried that she would not remember the way. However, when he opened the door, there she was, sheltered under an umbrella.

"You made it," Rainer said, smiling. "Come on in. I'll take that for you."

He reached out as Mouse folded up her umbrella and took it from her. Rainer studied her, feeling his nerves grow by the moment. Her hair was up in the usual ponytail, the rain having made her curls a bit frizzy. Mouse was wearing her usual oversized jeans and a plain white t-shirt that was so big it hung off her shoulders. The scuffed sneakers she wore did nothing to help her appearance. Yet Rainer found himself smiling a little bit. She's kind of cute that way, he thought. Although I'd love to see her in something nice, too.

"Come with me," Rainer said, leading her down to the pool room.

Mouse followed along behind him, her eyes trained on the floor. All of Rainer's friends looked up when he led her into the room. They had known that he'd invited her, and their reactions, then and now, were less than enthusiastic. Come on, guys, Rainer thought. Give her a chance.

"You guys know Mouse," Rainer said. "Mouse, these are my friends. Starting from the left over by the pool table we've got Randy, Paul, Todd, Jeff, and Blake. Over by the bar we got the girls, Tanya, Courtney, Jennifer, Carrie, and Leanne."

"Hi," Mouse greeted them quietly.

A chorus of hellos followed her shy greeting. Rainer decided he would have to keep her at his side most of the night. I'm beginning to think this was a bad idea, he thought, watching the way the girls eyed Mouse disdainfully. I was hoping they'd be a little more open than this.
"So, Mouse," Blake said, flashing her a charming smile. "Have you ever played pool?"

Rainer frowned. Blake was a good looking man; just under six feet, with short golden blonde hair, striking blue eyes, and a dimpled smile that girls loved. He was also known for being a big player and he was a braggart, always telling outrageous stories of the nights he'd supposedly spend with all kinds of girls. Rainer kept a tight hold on Mouse's wrist, not wanting her to go anywhere near Blake. Blake might have been a friend, and he was a good friend, but he was not a good boyfriend, especially not for a girl like Mouse.

"No, I haven't," Mouse replied, jerking her hand free of Rainer's hold. "I don't know how."

Blake grinned. "Come here. I'll show you."

Rainer opened his mouth to protest but Mouse had already made her way across the room. Damnit, he thought, watching carefully. I'm glad she's trying to be social...but does she have to be social with him? He settled back down on the couch, glowering as Blake put his arms around Mouse and showed her how to hold the cue. Rainer wasn't the only one who was upset, though. A glance over towards the wet bar showed that the girls were not pleased about this development either.

*****

Rainer wasn't sure if he should be happy or not. Mouse had eventually left Blake to his own devices; he'd been whispering things in her ear and he must have said something that offended her. However, she wasn't really getting along with anyone else. They were in the living room, music blaring from the stereo, while his friends paired up and swayed together to the music. Mouse sat in the corner, curled up on an armchair, looking miserable. I should just let her go home, Rainer thought, sighing softly.

"This stuff is boring," Blake said, letting go of Courtney to fiddle with the stereo. "Let's get some good grind music on."

Rainer groaned. His friends, however, could appreciate the music; they went back to dancing, bumping and grinding to the rhythm. Why do I hang out with these people? he wondered. Well, they weren't all bad, he supposed. They just hadn't grown up yet.

Out of the corner of his eye he noticed Mouse stand up and walk into the kitchen. He got up and followed her curiously. Rainer watched as she paused in front of the sliding glass door, staring out at the rain pouring down. Mouse kicked her sneakers off, pulled off her sock, and took her hair down. He licked his lips, watching the ebon curls bounce free around her shoulders. She opened the door and stepped out, moving quickly off the porch and out into the rain. Surprised, Rainer followed her out.

He could hear the music, fainter now, even through the rain. My parents will be so pissed when they find out, he thought, grinning. Not that I care. Mouse had stopped in the middle of the large backyard and turned to face him. Rainer eyed her; the rain plastered her shirt to her body, not only accentuating normally hidden curves, but turning the white cotton transparent. Smiling, he made his way across the yard to her.

"What are you doing?" Rainer asked when he reached her.

"I wanted to cool off," Mouse replied, smiling slightly. "They're really steaming it up in there."

Rainer laughed. "Don't mind them. It's all about hedonism for kids these days."

"Kids?" Mouse raised her eyebrows. "What are you?"

Grinning, Rainer stepped forward, winding an arm around her waist and pulled her hips up against his firmly. Her cheeks blazed, apparent even in the semi-darkness, but she didn't pull away.

"I'm a man," Rainer answered, rolling his hips against hers.

Mouse's cheeks darkened. "And men don't like hedonism?"

"I wouldn't say that," Rainer said, rolling his hips to hers again. "We're just better at it."

Mouse laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck, holding onto him. Bracing his hand against her hip, he guided her movements. Her clumsy attempts to grind her hips against his was just as arousing as her shy kisses, and Rainer could feel his body responding. Down boy, he thought, We don't want to scare our sweet little Mouse.

As they danced, Mouse slowly began to understand the motion and her grinding improved until each movement was fluid and sexy. Rainer placed his free hand on her neck, letting it slide down over her chest as she tilted her head back. He let go over her hips, allowing her the freedom to move them as she wished, and used his hands to force the wet, clinging cotton up a bit. Rainer traced his fingers over her stomach and ribs; her skin was wet and a little clammy, but still soft. Her skin is the only thing that's soft right now, he thought, groaning softy as she rubbed against his aching erection.

He bent to lick a few drops of rain water from her neck and felt her shiver. Rainer ran the tip of his tongue from just below her ear, along her jaw line, to her lips. Mouse's lips parted willingly for him, and her swept the inside of her mouth. She must have been eating chocolate at some point, he thought. She tastes delicious. Rainer wrapped his arms around her, kissing her hungrily.

Mouse clung to him, her lips moving restlessly against his. He slowly pulled her down to the wet grass, kissing her the entire time. She moaned, wriggling beneath him, and arching her back into his touch as his hands gently fondled her breasts. Rainer nudged her thighs open and pressed his knee between them, using it to rub and tease. Mouse pressed against him, her hands leaving off their grip to pull his shirt away from his skin and touch his chest. He sighed, dropping his mouth to her earlobe to nibble on it gently.

"Shit!" Mouse hissed suddenly.

Rainer lifted his head. "What? What?"

"Look behind you," She said.

Reluctantly Rainer lifted himself off of her and turned to glance over his shoulder. By the porch lights he could see that his friends had clicked off the light in the kitchen and were gathered around the sliding glass door, watching. He groaned, dropping his head against Mouse's shoulder. I'm going to kill them, Rainer thought. I'm going to kill them and then I'm going to throw them all in the river.

"I'm so sorry," He said at last, pulling away. "Uh...we should um...get dried off. I can give you something to wear."

"It's getting late," Mouse said, allowing him to help her to her feet. "I should get home."

"You could stay here," Rainer suggested. "I mean like...we have guest rooms...so you don't have to drive in this rain."

"Um, I uh...well..." Mouse stammered. She looked away. "Thank you."

Rainer decided that it was about time to kick the rest of his friends out. I hope she doesn't ask why I make them drive in the rain, he thought, glancing at her. Although I would think after that she would get it. Well, there would be other times to worry about what Mouse thought of him. He had more immediate problems to take care of.

*****

Mouse groaned, rolling away from the sunlight steaming in through the window. For a moment she was disoriented; this certainly wasn't her room. Then she remembered; last night, the dancing and kissing in the rain, crawling exhausted into a bed in one of Rainer's guest rooms. She climbed out of the bed, pulling Rainer's oversized shirt tight around herself, and crept out into the hallway. At the moment Mouse really, really needed to find a bathroom.

Voices filtered down the hallway from the living room. Although she didn't want to intrude on anyone's conversation, she did want to find the bathroom...without stumbling into a bunch of other places first. Mouse padded down the hall and paused before she walked out into the living room. The voices turned out to be Rainer and his mother, and they were arguing.

"Why is there white trash sleeping in one of my bedrooms?" Rainer's mother demanded.

"She isn't white trash, mom, she's..." Rainer started.

"Don't give me that!" His mother interrupted. "That girl is beneath you, Rainer! What is she doing here? Don't you dare tell me you're friends with that girl! I swear I'll disown you if you are!"

"Mom, I'm just...it's...well..." Rainer stammered. "She's just my tutor. That's all."

Mouse drew back, biting her lip. Just your tutor, huh? she thought, fuming. Do you kiss all your tutors like that? She turned and fled back down the hall, into the room she'd slept in. Chewing on her lip, telling herself that those weren't tears forming in her eyes, she struggled back into her still damp clothes. She didn't have her hair tie anymore and her curls were a tangled mess. Mouse shoved her feet into her shoes without bothering to look for her socks, and stomped out into the hall.

Rainer was standing in the living room when she stormed through. His eyes widened in surprise, and he made a grab for her. Mouse jerked away from his touch and spun to face him.

"Don't touch me!" Mouse hissed. "I'm just your tutor, you know."

Rainer blanched. "Mouse, wait, that wasn't what..."

"No!" Mouse cut him off, jerking open the door. "Forget it, Rainer. You don't know me, and you never will!"

The door slammed shut, leaving Rainer standing in the middle of the living room, is mouth agape.
