I always admired the song "Knoxville Gal," so I borrowed the theme and meter. This poem can be put to the same music.

There was a time in Knoxville town,
When Sue was courted fair.
A pretty girl of twenty-one,
With honey-golden hair.
Her eyes were brown her heart was true,
Her love forever more.
This pretty, little Knoxville girl,
Was everywhere adored.

But Grady Smith had spied her there,
He was, an evil man.
He made his mind up he would court,
And try to win her hand.
So court her there and that he did,
And win her in the end,
And Sue thought that she'd really found,
A life-time long true friend.

Then Sue discovered what he was,
And she became afraid.
She feared him more and more each day,
She looked around for aid.
But he had a heart of ice,
A mind of bestial rage,
He was a truly jealous man,
And tried to keep her caged.

Sue knew the story told of old,
About the Knoxville gal,
About the way she lost her life,
Sue thought her name was Sal.
But Sue had no intentions then,
Of giving up her life.
She had no future plans that she'd,
Become a mad man's wife.

So late one day she took a walk,
She knew he lurked unseen,
She also knew where Big John was,
Who came there when she screamed.
For Grady Smith thought he was safe,
And tried to kill her there,
But Big John grabbed him from behind,
And flung him through the air!

Big John threw him so far out,
He landed in mid-stream,
Thus ending Smith's unworthy life,
And stopped Sue's nightmare dream!
Now John paid court to Sue and won,
They quickly settled down,
By that old old river there,
That flows by Knoxville town!!
