"Is this what you wanted? Is this what you thought?"
He said with a passion, as the tails he caught.
She looked over her shoulder, with her mouth open wide,
Fingers strumming her clitoris, she was into her stride.

She shuddered and yelled, screaming, "Hit me again!"
And by the light of the fire, in the warmth of his den,
He found his eyes on her, as he swung back the flogger,
Thinking, "Can a man be luckier, to have such a lover?"

Responsive and wicked, with hardly a limit,
A lot like a dream, yet he was there. Right in it!
At the end of the night, when they'd finished their play,
She climbed into her car, and she drove away.

Another night stolen, another 'faux pas',
He cursed himself, "loser", as he watched from afar.
She drove into the sunset, and out of his life,
He didn't know how he was going to tell his wife.

I found all this out, when he called me that night,
When he poured out his heart, before saying, "I'll be all right".
Me in my comfort, giving awkward advice,
Telling him 'honesty' would surely suffice.

He sat in his den, and pondered his plight,
He was caught in a quandry, with no end in sight.
A novice surviving in a loveless marriage,
"Like her," he thought, as he took out the garbage.

By the road, standing, staring, suddenly sensing the dread,
His skin feeling goosebumps, and shaking his head.
Not one other thought, none 'til the next day,
'Til he was reading the paper, and hell came to pay.

She was "rounding a corner, too fast for the weather",
A journalist said, in a tone far too clever.
The car, it rolled over, supposedly four times,
They had her in hospital, watching vital signs.

She was in a deep coma, with survival slim, it was clear,
But she held on like a fighter, until the next year.
Her husband found someone, he didn't wait long,
My friend said nothing, though he knew it was wrong.

With the coming of the new year, she took a turn for the worse,
Though his divorce went through, he felt like he was cursed.
Her parents he met, as a 'family friend',
But her husband gave up, thinking this was the end.

But she held on gamely, and the year became two,
He held a candle for her, it was all he could do.
A novice no more, his experience grew,
But he couldn't commit, because of her, he knew.

We talked quite often, he and I,
And whenever she came up, there was a tear in his eye.
I wanted to tell him to move on, that's true,
But it wasn't something I felt I should do.

From those humble beginnings, a true Dominant emerged,
Though he knew who he was, his love was submerged
Beneath longing and needing, and making his way,
He felt he'd come far, yet he was reminded each day

Of his love for one hurt; one in limbo it seemed,
He thought of her often and his love for her screamed.
He never found peace; and one day she died,
And into his loneliness, forever he cried.

It was never the same, feeling passionate and free,
And if she looked down, I'm sure she could see
That the light of her life, lived on in his eyes,
Though he blamed himself, he kept it well disguised.

For it is without her, that he must forge on,
In endless self-hatred, God, it seems so long
Since her sweet memory beckoned, in one of his dreams,
Like fingers through her hair. Yesterday it seems.

So he lives on quietly, finding his feet,
Wondering if it's her, that he sees in the street.
Then reminding himself, though they won't be together,
His memory of her, is with him forever.

When he's at his most vulnerable, unhappy, unfulfilled,
He looks in his album and he sees her distilled.
She wags her sweet finger and tells him, "chin up",
"Half empty? Why no, it's half full, this cup!"

She was always the one, who was happy to smell
All those sweet roses, and other flowers as well,
Who found peace, and forgiveness, and rest in the end,
And he did too, in her memory, thank God, my sweet friend.

So moving

Technically, there are some forced rythmns here, but damn Nathan, who cares?

This reminds me of something else I read once, a long poem about this guy that had died and left a bag of stuff and a note to the person who claimed the bag. I forget the name of it.

This reminds me of that. The rollercoaster of emotions, with the sledgehammer addition of personal experience. I'm just surprised I haven't read this before. What a treat.
