A dream takes me back
into a time that's passed

I find myself face to face
with the monster who resides within

My cheek still stings from the slap of his hand
Pain filling my face
Leaving me with emptiness and grief

My heart pounds in trepidation
This time he may do more than simply hurt me

My body shakes
The nightmare takes hold
Wrapping it's cold fingers around my heart

"Baby." A voice calls to me

A strong hand cups my cheek
Caressing it
Thumbs brushing the tears away
Erasing the memory

Strong arms claim me
Lovingly
They protect me

My eyes open slowly
Knowing I am safe
My new life surrounds me

The monster is gone...
For now.
