Off  the lake road lies Howard Street
             just one lane
                one way
             back in time

small simple cottages built by islanders
before the highway begot the tourists
surrounded by oaks which block out the sun
you walk on an oyster shell bed
at night Black Beard lurks behind every tree
least that's what the brochure said

the street's name shake has a descendant
who will sell you fine crafts at retail
while spinning yarns of the village and sea
under the shade of those grand oak trees
            just one lane
               one way
            back in time

Reminds me of

a band down here called "The Ashley Gang". They are from the east coast of Florida (Sebastian, Melbourne, and jacksonville. Many of their songs are Florida memories, and there is one in particular called "The River Road" that is based on a street called Jungle Trail on the barrier island. Great song and a great poem you wrote there!
