awake this morning
few moments before six
dark outside and dark in the room in which I sleep
bed warm around me in all directions
a slight red-wine headache and a
caffeine urge warmer than the bed around me,
step for a minute, naked, onto the front porch
breath in the late night / early morning mist
to the kitchen to boil water, find a cup and a filter
slice an apple while the water boils
play a few cords on the piano while the water drips
slowly, filling the Public Radio Mug with dark liquid,
back down the stairs, down the dark hall
into the dark womb on the still-warm bed
the alarm has sounded, I disarm it
clump two pillows against the headboard
with the sheets and comforter pulled over me
drink my coffee in slow deliberate sips
watching out the window, the sky starting to lighten
outlines of the birch trees starting to appear
the coffee is completely inside me, more quickly than I had anticipated
I look into the empty mug expecting to see something
someone -- the cup is empty
I slide down under the covers, discard the pillows
I close my eyes, and press a finger against each eyeball
against the slight morning headache, that I had hoped the coffee would cure,
holding perfectly still, eyes tightly closed
I can feel the Earth
rotating beneath me
the slight tug of Coriolis’ acceleration
of gravity, the weak and the strong atomic forces
electromagnetism
it’s all relative, Einstein said
but relative to what …?
